Cronkite had an excellent delivery, a relatively deadpan affect, an avuncular presence and simply reported facts that, for most Americans, were simply unavailable elsewhere, unless one happened to read the newspaper.
Today, delivering the news is really about providing a form of entertainment to hundreds of millions of people whose collective neural reward system has been warped by constant doses of dopamine, courtesy of smart phones.
I'd wager that with the exception of those of us of a certain age, Cronkite would be singularly unappealing to most Americans today.
To top it off, the competition for audience share is SO intense that it really demands that content be editorialized -- with facial expressions, body language, or clever repartee. Otherwise, why select one news channel over another?
People have always liked to hear things that comport with their preconceived notions.
But today its an epidemic, at least it seems that way.
