It happened. Net Neutrality is being pulled starting next month.
How will that affect us here? I can see where ppl who have their own sites might be in real trouble, but how about us selling and buying on eBay?
I remember eBay asking us to write or sign a petition against that last year, but forgot the reasons they gave. Who has a good memory or better info?
Thanks!
P.S. David Lazerous (spelling?) is the source I have. Credible? I think so... The news just broke (it's 12:30pm now, Tues. the 22nd.)

I have a landline, I will perhaps get a cheap cell phone for emergencies. On the road, they are useless when there is a REAL emergency.
As a disclaimer...I also read books (how Luddite is that?) and write letters, and and and.
Maybe this isn't such a bad thing as it might get people back to crafts and art and music. And maybe talking face to face instead of into a little device.
I sure don't have a problem with anyone being allowed to charge for an internet product they offer. Just like merchandise in the store or items on the menu at a restaurant, I'll pick and choose, and buy mostly what I want and need and use.
We gave up our landline months ago, but may.. have one put in again. It was convenient for my DH, who never knows where he last had his cell phone. But as to "On the road, they are useless when there is a REAL emergency."... so's the landline! lol We've never not had cell service on the road, but I know there are some area that are sort of dead zones, ... no landlines in your car in those areas either, so guess that's even.
As the years/decades pass by, it all changes so much and adapts to the current time. Magazines and newspapers are dying back in print form but expanding their online presence, as example. What dies out in brick & mortar seems to grow as an online presence.. or.. if it's truly not adaptive to modern need anymore, it just.. dies.
And pricing has always relied a lot on competition, which has always seemed to continually favor the one who is offering the current best deal. Whether it's taking advantage of the latest credit card offer or the free-months-of-service if you switch offer, competition always seems to be pitting one against the rest, to the benefit of many pocketbooks.
I don't think this move is going to have much effect on whether people interact more face-to-face, or whether they expand more into the faceless internet social regions.

Just got an email from Netflix. Cost is going up to $13.99 starting next month. I'm just waiting for Hulu to follow. Still a whole lot cheaper than satellite television, though. (no cable out here)

You're probably lucky about no cable where you are! Our cable bill has gone up and up and up, year after year after year, for YEARS now! A friend says theirs is nearly $300.
I dropped landline (which was often static-y sounding anyway) when our bill was just barely shy of $200. Dropped that down to just under $170 a month for just TV and internet, and NO Cinamax or any of those at that! Doesn't seem that long ago when my bill for all of that was less than $90 a month.
We had to replace TV a month ago, so have the *smart* TV now. We're going to subscribe to Netflix when we figure out how to make a movie show up on our TV screen. Have to have a grandson set it all up for us and show me how to click it into existence. I can write the payment check each month. Just don't know yet how to GET it. I'm a technology dud.

We ditched DirecTv five years ago this month, bought some Rokus and haven't looked back lol
We had been DirecTv customers so long we were grandfathered in to every channel they had except for the paid movie ones like HBO, etc. When the price rose to $80/month we decided we had been stupid long enough and got rid of them. No need to pay $80/mo when we literally only used four or five channels. Our Rokus have served us well with thousands of free channels to choose from. I thought at first we would have problems since we only have a 2.5 mbps internet, but we can stream two televisions at one time with rarely a problem (only when the weather is bad and our internet slows). If I need local channels we have an antenna and get ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, FOX, Me-TV, CreateTV, MyMS, CW and a couple of local religious channels, all free and clear as a bell. No need for cable or satellite, we were stupid beyond belief to have paid television for so long!

Hi Doug... a no brainer - that large venues like Ebay planned for this eventuality. Do you know if, as in partnerships listed in the link below will likely grow? Particularly interested in the Google search engine/Ebay/Paypal partnership. Thanks
Not interested if they have a "strong partnership" but rather... how much more for a seller to list here???

Hi Southern,
We got rid of everything 11 years ago...TV...videos...stereo...CD's...everything except the computer and basic phone and internet.
Currently we have been grandfathered in for 10 years for our Internet/Land line/ Long distance for $68 a month before taxes...rolling it up to about $72.
We have 1 computer (the Dell is pretty much toast so that doesn't count) and one IPhone 6s we ended up taking over for one of the kids a couple of years ago. We have some kind of AT & T pay as you go monthly thing that gives us a lot for $40 a month. So our total expense for these electronic goods is under $125 a month.
Every so often one of the kids will come by and say you need to see this movie...they own all that stuff...so maybe 3 or 4 times a year we will oblige them and attempt to watch them.
Mrs C did say there was a "Red Box" outside of the Dollar General and she suggested we get that movie "Going In Stye" with Michael Cain & Morgan Freeman, but when she went over to it the movie wasn't in there...lol.

This is not good. But the only way we can fight back is not to pay the extra for those services. Go with basics. It is all I can afford anyway. There are many new companies starting up and those services are free. If you haven't checked out VUDU, Tubi TV, and Crackle (Sony) there are many free Movies and Free TV shows to watch on those Apps. I've been watching movies I haven't ever seen on Directv, ,and many I haven't seen in years that are good to watch again. The Cable services and Directv are having and going to have a hard time keeping customers, because now we can order al-la-cart!

how many options do you have?
I can go with comcast or century link. If comcast is charging $150, what makes you think century link will charge $50? Just look at airlines. One raises a fee and they all jump on it.
theoretically we have "choice" with cable companies now. How is that working out for ya? Do we have any choice of what we see? I want to see the local tv station in Miami. Is that an option? Online it could be. What if eBay and Comcast have a fight and comcast drops them? How will that affect your sales? You might still have access to eBay, but will your buyers? No buyers means no sales. How many do you think would subscribe to eBay? Would you pay $10 a month to buy stuff here? How many people do you think would?

Tell your elected representatives that you expect them to fight for an open internet and to condemn the FCC’s chairman, Ajit Pai (a former Verizon lawyer and current sock puppet for the CableMafia) plans to repeal what over 75% of Americans agree with ... Net Neutrality. In these times of political divisiveness, this is an overwhelming majority of BOTH parties bipartisanship.

I told mine this and he sent a form letter all about why it is a good thing. For him, I'm sure it's paying off very well.
Looking for a country, looking for American refuguee's.
