They Pulled The Plug on Net Neutrality. Now What?

It happened.  Net Neutrality is being pulled starting next month.

How will that affect us here?  I can see where ppl who have their own sites might be in real trouble, but how about us selling and buying on eBay?

I remember eBay asking us to write or sign a petition against that last year, but forgot the reasons they gave.  Who has a good memory or better info?

Thanks!

P.S. David Lazerous (spelling?) is the source I have. Credible?  I think so...  The news just broke (it's 12:30pm now, Tues. the 22nd.)

You may not be so happy when your internet provider starts charging for all the popular websites. Like Hulu? That will be 5.00 a month more. Like youtube? That will be an extra 5.00 please. They will be charging like the cable companies do now. You won't be able to just click on any website, you will need a paid subscription.

I think because the cable companies are in deep, DEEP financial doo-doo right now!  They have raised their rates and raised their rates over past years until they are so expensive now they are losing customers!  Too expensive.  They like to bundle our TV, internet, and phone service... but far too many are cutting the cable entirely, streaming online only, going to free wi-fi places, have dumped their landlines, etc.  They've basically dumped the cable companies.  So now, these vast huge companies are hurting.  This (I think) is an attempt to help them stay in business, and across this nation.. that's a lot of people keeping their jobs instead of being laid off.

I don't think it's UNfair to pay for content you access, so don't think subscriptions to sites you enjoy is over-reaching at all.  I'd always wished I could just subscribe to the few television channels I watch, instead of having to pay so MUCH for the many I never switch to!

I'm usually not too much of a **The Sky Is Falling!!!** type of person, so will judge the pros and cons of it all WHEN it is finally a fact and has got the kinks worked out and is up and in effect.  Then I will form my opinion of it.

Hello everyone,

Please remember to keep discussion on the topic of how this development may impact buying and selling on eBay. If you wish to discuss related political issues, then please post on The Soapbox.

Thanks!

Well, I guess my internet days are over - I pay a high premium now just for the internet - once the nickel/dime starts, I will be out.

I thought they weren't supposed to vote on it until 14 Dec.

Re: They Pulled The Plug on Net Neutrality. Now What?

We pay an outrageous amount for a business account so that we can have unlimited bandwidth. If they mess with that it will be really bad. We stream the station 24/7. Regular residential internet won't work. Been there, done that. We tried satellite internet. We reached our max in 15 minutes. We had that service for less than 24 hours. We try not to bring down the station because the royalty licensing people have a cow everytime we do and threaten to revoke our license even though we have paid a lot for our licensing fees. I dont even know what is going to happen. It is scary when your business depends on the internet.

I just wanted to say that we do use the internet for online sales on various venues, but we could live without that. I don't depend on it to pay the bills. Losing the station would be heartbreaking. We have had it since 2004. There are a lot of small broadcasters that would lose their stations. Most of us are barely hanging on now.

i am glad then,

i am 1 of those people that really don't care about the internet and electronics.

if using the internet becomes that expensive, i will stop using it, period.

the only reason i bought a laptop was to sell on ebay.

along the way got to enjoy online banking and streaming shows on Hulu.

but that is about all.

going away this week.

ended all my listings.

might be a while before i do ebay again.

but if all that stuff happens might never use the net ever again.

Here's what to expect from the CableMafia when there is no longer Net Neutrality. A world without Net Neutrality will end up meaning that you have to pay more to access the internet content that you want. And it will also crush innovation from the start-ups that *could be* the next Facebook, or Google or Microsoft ... or eBay.

Yes, already receiving ads for this a week ago... like they knew they had it made.  Received one 2 days ago.... subscribe to wireless provider get Amazon Prime free for 1 year....

So the plan is... cut taxes for the mega corp and they employ more under income people.... yea, right.

Re: They Pulled The Plug on Net Neutrality. Now What?

The cable/internet/phone companies may THINK they have won this but once our Netflix and Amazon dont work because they are throttling content they dont like, we will switch over to their competitors who support our preferred streaming services and they will lose customers.  I get my internet from a cable company that I am sure would prefer I get the whole bundle with cell phone and TV from them but I love my phone service (and get discounts through my employer with that service) and dont NEED their TV because I stream and get the channels I WANT without paying for all the ones I never watch and the whole tier nonsense.  I dont think I am alone either.  I think it will go just as badly as when the phone companies got too big and jerked people around on rates and plans and they cut the land lines and went to cell only.  People will find a way to get what they want at the price they are willing to pay (hello? EBAY!)

Those aren't dollar amounts for their service... those are the add on dollar amounts for your subscribed service... avg 89.00 per month basic subscriber service, then add those on.....

Re: They Pulled The Plug on Net Neutrality. Now What?

I'll just wait and see.  The portion of *rant and rave* allotted to me at birth is running low.  I can't use up much more of my allotted amount prematurely.  What if I were to run out of angst before my end?

I'll wait until it's all a done deal and I have more info on how it's working for ALL involved, not just me, etc.  This needs to be beneficial for a nation, for employers as well as their employees as well as we individuals, and how it needs to work in our future as we're turning more and more deeply into this internet world.  As there always seems to be pros and cons to everything and so very many unseen long-term variables.. I'll want to witness the pros and cons eventually, and then I'll make up my mind.

Re: They Pulled The Plug on Net Neutrality. Now What?

I worked for telecom (various, ATT, Pacific Bell, MCI, Qwest, etc) for 35 years. This is NOT good. This is the very reason that Judge Green broke up the huge monopoly. What this means is that every company that offers any Internet product can charge whatever they want and they WILL. Follow the money. Yes every company should be able to make a profit and pay their employees but at what cost?

I have an antenna...I do not and will never have cable again. I have a landline, I will perhaps get a cheap cell phone for emergencies. On the road, they are useless when there is a REAL emergency.

As a disclaimer...I also read books (how Luddite is that?) and write letters, and and and.
Maybe this isn't such a bad thing as it might get people back to crafts and art and music. And maybe talking face to face instead of into a little device.
