Tariffs, UPS Charge

Hi, just want to share this, I sell on ebay from Canada and yes a lot of my buyer are from the US.

I send a package to one customer, the order was 222$ CAD.  I bought a shipping label with UPS.  It was of a test that I was doing, since I knew that the package was going to coming back to me if there was an issue.  Well, I track the package and It said that the receiver refused to pay tariff and services.  I call UPS and here is the fact : on 222$ they charge 35% tariff so, 77$ + 24$ for UPS charge.  Thanks.

It is my understanding that eBay considers Refused packages to be Undeliverable, and that sellers are not required to refund a single penny on Undeliverable shipments.

Most sellers in this situation will refund the purchase price MINUS their costs for shipping, fees, packaging, insurance, etc. BUT only when the shipment is back in their hands.

'refused to pay tariff and services'...it does mean no MBG...but should one refund the buyer anyway...plus there was a shipping charge and eBay fee...sounds complicated on what a seller should do.

In any case...the seller does lose some money I would think.

Your buyer should just pay the tarrif.

After all, think of all the money they are saving on lower grocery prices.

Thanks for sharing this experience.  In the past carriers of this sort  have left the package anyway, and then bill the seller/merchant for the money and brokerage fee. eBay will then take the money from you if you used eBay for the label.  Hopefully, they won't since the parcel is being returned.  Do let us know if anything else transpires.

Lol do not confused apple and pears.  Ebay will, at checkout from October I hear, have the buyer pay for tariff on the spot.  It won't change anything really because who want to pay 35% on a 100$ order.  I think.

Yes I will keep you inform.  In fact, in October, in one of my last reply, Ebay, is suppose to take care of all this so the US buyer will be ask to pay before checkout for the tariff.  I always buy my shipping label with Ebay.

When I was young and so was the Internet, I shipped exclusively with UPS. Being green and hungry I also shipped anywhere in the world that I was able to.

First time I shipped an order to Canada, I got an angry phone call from the buyer, UPS had charged him a huge customs clearance fee. That was the last time I shipped to any individual buyer in Canada via UPS. We still shipped to institutions and corporations via UPS.

Our shift to CanadaPost for individuals, eventually led to a refusal to ship to Canada.

hummm I was curious, so if I buy from the US, correct me if I'm wrong, there is on 100$ purchase from custom jewelry a tariff of 14$ and depending if you dont know the country of manufacturing it goes up to 24$.
