Are we still allowed to take a check if buyer asks first? And, it's an auction so until the buyer pays (i.e., check clears) the shipping deadline doesn't kick in, right?

After the auction ends with a winner, you'll have the winner's full contact info for... um, 30 days at least. Anyway, it'll be right there in your Sold items; just select the View Record action.
No need to overthink this, really. First of all, mailing a money order is at his risk, not yours, so if you're not planning to rip him off, then he as safe as if he paid you on-line. You owe the same Final Value Fees regardless of how you get paid, so there is no fee avoidance there either. Finally, if you have a zillion watchers on the item, there's a very good chance that someone else is going to swoop in during the final seconds and snatch it from him anyway. Let us know what happens in the end. Good luck!

My dad used to send checks for things he purchased here. Somehow he screwed up his PayPal account password and couldn't get in. None of his purchases were large. I would take a chance with a check.

Envelope? What is this thing you call an envelope?
Teasing aside, I am surprised by who STILL only takes checks. I pay my poor pool guy and gardener late all the time, because they only take paper checks - no Paypal, no Zelle or Venmo, they don't even want traditional auto pay because I guess it doesn't send an alert. Um....... if you took the first 3 you'd get an alert!

@mr_lincoln I recently had a local pickup (probably the first smooth successful one I've ever had) and was able to send my customer two addresses where we could meet through eBay messages-- before she ordered the book.
So... there's that.
I am surprised by who STILL only takes checks.
I mail cheques to my gardener and to the Public Service Pension Unit to straighten out a stupid problem they caused with my pension.
Other than that.
My gardener will take instant transfer, but I find it much less complicated to mail the cheque and I have a receipt.

Sending love and healing for Hubby and you - and if it were me, I'd only allow a Postal Money Order. Hoping that Hubby is on the mend!

@femmefan1946 I prefer checks, old school plus when I see and write the numbers and keep hand written track in a checkbook it makes more sense. I had a few "no paper" bills set up and was late on several payments ... mainly because I am geared to open, process paper and be done with it. But some newer things Like PayPal and electronic transfers for Sales Tax returns, etc. I love using the electronic ACH check payment or "Transfering $$ from PP to my bank account ... so its sort of a blend.
