Suspicious Message

I got a message from someone interested in an item I'm selling. They asked me to email them a response, put an email address and said "the email address on eBay is no longer in use." This seems extremely suspicious to me and I wanted to report it to eBay as I'm concerned this is a hacked account but I couldn't  find anywhere on Ebay to report something like that. Anyone know how to do that?

Do NOT reply to the message...they are attempting to scam you.

Add the ID to your Blocked Bidder List.

If you have the slightest doubt about a future buyer come back here.

Do not respond to the contact separate email address. Do report the buyer. EBay is currently scanning all messages between buyers and sellers so that buyer may already be in ebay's radar. EBay is actively addressing these infractions. I would advise you call eBay to report the buyer.

I was advised by a CSR to message the buyer back and warn them about sending such information.

Personally I feel as though that is ebay's job, that I am not an authority who can or should admonish a buyer, but ebay would read that response from you as you are not participating in of ebay sales

Don't do that.

If you respond to a member, the member can continue to communicate even after being blocked.  Of course, the reality is any member can contact any other member through their profile page. Blocking a username is soo silly.

@bluefurrykitty

Block them and report them.

They want you to email them so they can get your email.

Then they will send you a fake PP email saying you got paid and to ship.

Or they want your email so they can sell it to spammers.

My wife used my email to buy an item on the net (not ebay)

within a week I was getting 50 spams a day.

My wife went back to the site, and read reviews, all bad.

They were selling trinkets, but the real business was selling email addys.

You would think with eBay's crack down on off site selling, that they would supply a report this message link in the messages.

You mean - they would have left the link in the email to report a message, right?

I think the CSR who told you that should be reprimanded by eBay. Any time you receive a message from a scammer, you should not only report and block them, but you should NEVER EVER reply to them. That's true not only for eBay, but for cyberspace in general.

I agree there is conflicting information coming from ebay. As I stated I do not think it is my place to police ebay's buyers.

We do not know that the OPs messager was a scammer, jacket, etc. I have had buyers contact me with a question and include their phone number, email address, coded email address. We never respond other than through the ebay message system, but often they are actual buyers. Had one recently who purchased the tables from us (on eBay of course)

I am in complete agreement that contact should not be taken off ebay

If the email address on eBay is no longer in use, how the Heck did they message you from it?

Next thing you know, they'll either do the fake PayPal payment scam sockmonkeydave referenced, or they'll overnight a check to you for more than the price of the item they are purchasing from you, accompanied by instructions to immediately deposit it and then wire a portion to a third party to cover some expense they are incurring but won't be able to handle personally.

I work at a financial institution, and I see these checks frequently. They're always fraudulent, and they end up being returned, so the person depositing the check ends up losing the money they've wired, the item they've sent to the scammer, and incurs returned item fees and sometimes overdraft fees as well.
