Stuck in Neutral ...

Our county has over 1/2 million people in it ... thus far there are 10 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and no deaths.

Our State has 67 counties and 27 have no reported cases.  2 Weeks of limited contact seems to be helping but my feeling is that rural areas that are seeing few confirmed cases may feel like they are stuck in neutral ... I know I do.

Many sources for inventory have closed ... online estate and auction houses are still holding auctions but stating they will retain everybody's items until the restrictions are lifted and their regular offices resume again.   That's not really a solution, putting out $$ for inventory but having no clue when you might get it?

Non-Life Sustaining businesses have to be closed but pot shops and liquor stores remain open ... what is up with that?

I am anticipating that we will be put under these constraints again for another 2 weeks ... to sometime in early April.

My feeling is that the whole world feels stuck in neutral - rural, urban, or suburban.

Alcohol is one of the few substances that when an addict is going through withdrawal they can actually die.

If it is not a solution for you, then don't put out $$ for inventory without having any clue when you will get it.

I suspect pretty much everyone is anticipating that, except perhaps a few politicians who are skeptical of science and seem willing to exchange the health of the sick and elderly for a better economy.

Re: Stuck in Neutral ...

Wait aren't you in PA ?
My entire family is in PA also
I grew up there & I thought PA  Gov. Wolfe shut down Liquor stores !!
I know they can still go into the Shoprite & get Wine , maybe beer not sure but that's only because it's sold in the grocery store.

Here in NJ Gov. Murphy has allowed them to remain open and as of now we are #2 in cases in the USA behind NY
Not surprised as we are so close to NY as well as many of our residents work in NYC
Thankful I retired early and wasn't working & commuting in ….
Either way I for one given my age & underlaying conditions would not be out at sales until the dust settles so I'm doing what I Have to do

I wish everyone Good Health
stay safe

I am totally with you! Let's all work together to beat this beast ! And support those in the front lines in health care. Save those masks for the workers who must have them.

Re: Stuck in Neutral ...

If you don't mind my asking, what state are you in?

We here in Ohio have been issued a "shelter in place" order by the governor.  But we have been assured that law enforcement won't be checking cars on the street to make sure their destination is one of those that are allowed.

And if, for instance, I am stopped and tell the officer I am driving to my pharmacy to pick up my meds, is he going to follow me there to make sure I am not lying?

And, as for walkers, stopping them is absurd.  We are encouraged to get exercise and we have to walk our dogs.

Shouldn't law enforcement have more important duties?

Science tells us that a lot of people are killed every year in car accidents - over a million people every year worldwide.  Do you propose banning cars too?  Think of all the lives saved.

Re: Stuck in Neutral ...

Mr Lincoln, Unless I'm mistaken, the "pot shops" in PA are medical dispensaries, they aren't selling "recreational pot", which is still illegal in PA. Since pot can only be bought (legally) with a doctor's OK, they are akin to pharmacies, and so are kept open for that reason. The state stores were initially closed under the state's order, but I think lobbyist pressure has re-opened them. I believe our neighbor NY had already declared them "essential" businesses. Given that many of PA's cases are along the Jersey/New York border, do we really wants Pennsylvanians driving to other states to buy booze, and maybe bringing the booze and the virus back with them?

So far, the more rural counties in PA have been spared the worst, but keep in mind that most rural counties also have far fewer hospitals and medical facilities to deal with an outbreak if it rapidly escalates. So it is absolutely vital that we do what we can to prevent that.

Re: Stuck in Neutral ...

Around 36,000 Americans die in car accidents each year.      The flu kills around 1.4 % of those who get it.   This virus kills about 3.4 % of those who get it,  mostly older Americans and those with pre existing conditions.

Covid 19 is easier to transmit than the flu.     One gentleman,  traveling  through Grand Central Station,   led to the largest break out in the country in NY.      Half of all those who have the virus have no symptoms,  making them super spreaders.     Mardi Gras celebrations have led to Louisiana having the largest growing cases.     A group of Spring Break celebrators brought the virus to Arkansas.

The other problem is that nearly 1/2 of those who have the virus have no symptoms.      They walk around not knowing they are infecting others.

A small group of men in my town meet every week for breakfast.   They still met up until they shut down restaurants.   Of the 4,   3 have the virus and of those 3,  1 has died.

We can fix the economy.   We have done it before.   We can't fix my son's classmates pain because her Paw Paw died.

Flawed comparison. Car accidents are not infectious and there is no risk they will increase after to exposure to other victims.

If this does not end soon, the virus, financial woes, loss of jobs, social distancing;  the pot shops and liquor stores will help sustain people from going mad crazy!    And that is coming from me: a non-smoker and drinker. 🤔

Re: Stuck in Neutral ...

Hoping we are going to progress soon to some point like China is now where new cases seem to be coming from people coming into the country still. I respect Dr Fauci (spell) in that he knows that if we do not use social distancing we will spread this monster to a greater extent with no end in sight for longer periods of time. We are buying time so as to find a possible cure/vaccine so that more and more people will not die from this horrendous virus that seems to spare no one in particular age, gender, race.

If this gets really bad globally it is going to take a cooperative effort on all countries parts to work together money wise, time wise, expertise wise  to conquer this thing.

thoughts...

This would only be comparable to car accidents if they all happened in the same month and caused the medical staff to also have deadly accidents. Same with the flu.

The problem isn’t so much how many will eventually die, it’s the timeframe and the lack of infrastructure.

We have legal pot in the State but only medicinal sales are allowed under our shutdown.

I watched the fire, ambulance and police arrive yesterday to take my neighbor to the hospital. They didn’t seem to have enough protective gear but at least they had hand sanitizer.
