So I sold an item today and i got a message from a completely different user claimiing they purchased it and they need the address changed. He gave a name that doesnt match in any way and an address that is on the other side of the country from the actual shipping address. this is obviously a scam. my guess is he was watching my account and waiting for the item to sell, and once it sold, he sent me a message claiming it. thankfully I'm not and idiot. does this happen a lot and how can I report this guy? i mean, he did send me his name and address.

The only way I can find to report this is by calling CS. They used to have a report button and it is gone. Any complaints now have to be item related. If it were me I would take the time to call because this is a scam that needs to be nipped in the bud.

Maybe some else has another idea.

They can change the ship to address in PayPal.

This is becoming a common scam here. You can call customer service to report it and forward the messages to spoof@ebay.com

I know it's obvious, but only ship when it shows as Paid in Paypal.
And of course, if there is a different address in PP and eBay, ask the guy who sent money which is correct.

How do you know it's a scam? Was it not an ebay message?
Just asking.

If I am understanding this correctly it goes like this
You sell a expensive item to Joe Smith,
Sam Scam immediately messages you through contact seller and says I am the winner please ship to this address
Sam Scammer
1421 Reshipper Lane
Florida, USA
You ship and Joe Smith says wheres my item

You're a low-feedback account, and there are definitely people out there in the Big Bad World who lie in wait to try to scam some of the inexperienced out of their good items. The fact that he sent you his name and address means NOTHING.
The name and address you are to ship to is in your PayPal account.. along with their verification of the PAYMENT having been received and Okay to ship, and likely/hopefully/almost always that coincides with the name and address on record with eBay as well.
Use that, and you're safely covered.

The message has nothing to do with the sale. The sale procedes as normal. What to do with the scammer.
Report him.

OP was contacted by someone other than the winning bidder. A different user ID requested he ship the item to a different name and address than what is on the sales record and the paypal payment. Its a newer scam that popped up on the boards recently. The scammers are watching auctions and then contacting the seller (using the link on the listing so that the message is associated with the listing) after the auction ends and pretends to be the original buyer . The goal is trick the seller into shipping to THEM instead of the actual buyer.
