Next level dumb by the execs at eBay. Just had my brass tobacco spittoon removed due to “violating policy against offensive material”. I took a look at the policy and nowhere does a vintage brass spittoon apply. My only guess is because it was made by Redskin Tobacco, and that still is so far reaching on ebays part.
How people who believe this stuff offends anyone can have a well-paying decision making job is beyond me. Yet my child can purchase sex toys, nude photos, and Cardi B merchandise…

Unfortunately there are plenty of people who don't have a clue and will find a way to be offended by anything. The only option you have to sell the spittoon is to not include the manufacturer's information. I have quite a few rare collectibles that I wouldn't sell here on eBay as I'm sure someone would find them offensive.

Dont bother calling, they won't be able to explain themselves and they will just say all you need to know is in your email.

Lucky you your only guess is correct. One of the new taboo words is "Redskin" so Ebay's action are not particularly far reaching nor unexpected. I Just wonder how Richard Pryor's estate is handling all this nonsense.

Cancel culture is to blame. A native American was offended by the legal brand name word "Redskin" Tobacco. Pretty soon the term ticket "scalping" will be replaced with ticket reselling.

Just relist it without naming the brand, since that is the offensive issue. As you said, it's only a brass spittoon. I have one I use as a planter. Best of luck to you....

In "polite society" scalping hasn't been used for quite a while. "Brokering in the secondary market" is what they call it now.
FYI - The ticket "scalpers" never liked the term either, I've known quite a few in that business, it offended them as they liked to think they were providing a "valuable service".

I think that's called 'consequence culture' - insult people, and the consequences are they won't like it.

Had a co-worker lose her job by sending an email and use that word with gallery. They terminated her the next day. I had no idea of the origin or why it was offensive, but we received a 3 paragraph email letting us know why. There are all sorts of phrases and euphemisms that are prohibited corporately by my company.
Makes me want to never send another e-mail. (btw, there is one phrase I used to use a lot that to me seemed to have zero actually meaning and of course, it too is offensive. They actually gave us examples)

Bwahahahahaha! No 'redskin' potatoes allowed!
They would offend someone.

I hate when people are offended for others.
I had a couple in my house to look at a couch that I was selling. The woman saw an advertising poster on my wall for a tobacco company that included a large, stylized image of an indian wearing a war bonnet and got upset, actually claiming that it was racist. Before throwing them out, I pointed out that that tobacco company was completely owned and operated by Native Americans. I didn't take time to entertain any claims of cultural appropriation, as the company gave me the poster, so I assume they're okay with me having it. It's more cultural appreciation anyway, as it is with most claims.
I am a volunteer here to try and help others, so be nice and remember - My advice might well be worth what you're paying for it.

I had no idea of the origin
As it happens, I do. In 1947 on the brand new media known as "television" there was a extremely popular puppet show called Howdy Doody. "Hey kids - what time is it?" (answer) "It's Howdy Doody time". Watched it regularly. There was an enclosed area for the audience made up entirely of children. They were called the Peanut Gallery. At that same time peanut was one of several endearing terms used by parents to address their children. And in keeping with that well known term (although he claimed not to like the term) Charles Schultz called his new comic strip Peanuts. It was NEVER meant as an insult but was in fact a term of endearment.
But them don't let facts get in the way of a raging Wokester.

Never hard of anyone caring about peanuts. But some of us are tired of being 'good sports' about being called rubbish names.
I had no idea people still said "woke" though.
