Brand new seller. What do most sellers do? Take their packages to USPS, have USPS pickup, stick your packages in a blue mailbox close by?  Just wondering as I start, will I be driving to post office daily once off the ground? Can I get a same day pickup from USPS?  Thank you for helping!!!

Re: Shipping

It will totally depend on your situation.  I used to do daily pickups (no, you can't get a same day pickup), when I had a great carrier.  Now, I'm back to dropping off pkgs at the PO cuz my carrier retired & all the subs don't know how.   Pickups are frequently missed, it really just depends on your carrier.    At my old house they were 50/50 if they'd happen.  A mile away, I had a great carrier for years, he even gave me his number & I texted him the night before if I had pickups (cuz another issue is the PO forgets to put the pickup slip in his route for the day), but once he retired, I knew I was screwed again.

Some people have great carriers, others don't.  Some are on a rural route, others aren't.  BTW, I found out that my city of almost 1 million people is over 1/2 "rural route" even though none of it is rural, the USPS is a mess, but rural routes have different rules.

Best 2 pieces of advice, make sure your handling time is reasonable for your situation, as you must get an Acceptance scan prior to your handling time expiring or you'll get dinged by eBay.   Second most important, make sure YOU get that Acceptance scan every time!   Whether you take it to the PO or have your pickup person do it, it's your responsibility cuz without it, it may never get an acceptance scan.   If your in a decent size city, your PO will likely have APC kiosks & you can now get your acceptance scan on those, so you don't have to wait in line.

I think the vast majority of ebayers print their postage online either from eBay or from a 3rd party such as Pirate Ship & then either do a PO drop off or have a pickup.

ETA:  there are 2 options for pickups on the USPS website.  Free is when the carrier is coming anyway.  The other is for a timed pickup, but that costs like $20.  IDK anyone who has ever used it.

Re: Shipping

Every sellers situation is different.

I myself print out my USPS labels every night directly from ebay and have my mail carrier pick them up every morning.

FYI Printing out labels from ebay saves you money vs. going to the post office.

If everything will fit in the mailbox, i just put up the red flag, no need to schedule a pick up.

If everything does not fit in the mailbox, I leave the larger packages on my front porch and schedule a pick up.

I also put a homemade reusable placard in my mailbox indicating there are more packages on the front porch.

Re: Shipping

Printing USPS postage online is cheaper than going to a Post Office (ALL services except Media Mail). As far as handing over to USPS that is simply a question of convenience for you.

You can schedule a pick-up online, not sure how late you can do that to assure a next day pick-up. Alternatively you can hand them to your letter carrier.

Re: Shipping

`I use USPS a lot, set up an acct on their site and order
free mail supplies. Use the customs sleeves for the labels, all free.
I can get a lot of things into a flat rate padded envelope.
I use the 1096L boxes and bend them to the size I need and stuff them into the
padded flat rate, or in some cases it's cheaper to send it based on size.
I used to use "Pirate Ship" a lot but now Ebay also offers shipping based on size instead of just weight. So make sure your dimensions are correct in the listing.
You can't get same day pickup as far as I know and frequently they don't pickup at all.
I tend to drive to post office to drop off. No blue boxes where I live.
Scheduling a pickup adds an extra day or 2 to the time of delivery, since our post office only empties the box once a day at 8am and also only sends mail down the line once a day at 11am. So I drop off at night. If I scheduled a pickup, it wouldn't go out until the day following the pickup plus a day to wait for the pickup. And you need those precious scans to meet the "handling time" you set. I say 2 days on most things.
I still use Pirate Ship for many UPS shipments to Canada and Intl.
but I find I get a better discount with my UPS account on some Intl. shipments.
But it's a PIA with the UPS site since you don't get an accurate price until you've entered all the info, and Pirate ship does an instant import from Ebay!  Very quick!
I see now, FedEx is offering something similar to Priority Mail, also with free shipping supplies etc.and more reasonable pricing, based on size, but it is not convienant for me to use Fed Ex. In the last 10 years they only lost one package, and mis-delivered another, but at the exact moment the buyer called to ask about it, a benelovant person brought him his package while I was on the line, so I got lucky there.
So, there you have it.

Re: Shipping

I have to get over not trusting USPS. It scares me to have packages taken and then hopefully scanned and sent…. You’re in Hawaii, where I trust people to take their time and get it done right. Lol! Sounds like eBay has our backs for never received merchandise. Newbie fears. Thank you, mahalo, for answering. I appreciate and need to get a red flag for my mail box! 😂

Re: Shipping

@rlradski

Flag gets put up on the box. My rural carrier picks up. (and scans)

(not a high crime area)

I have an additional auxiliary oversize box for overflow. (mounted over a large standard rural mailbox)

If I have an inordinate amount going out, or a large item on a rainy day I will sometimes take them to a nearby PO (closes at noon) where they get an acceptance scan from the handheld scanner. (no receipt)

If I am headed someplace on another errand when post offices along the way are open, I will take the outgoing with me to get a scan and a paper receipt.

I keep track of my mileage for a deduction at income tax filing time. I keep a pen and ink ledger of my mileage.

As I generally purchase/print the labels on the day of mailing I do not "schedule a pickup online".  Even if I should occasionally purchase the night before I still do not "schedule" as it's just, last I knew, a pain of paperwork for the office.

I’m so OCD. I seriously want to go to post office and stand in line to watch them scan my packages.  Does mail carrier scan each package they pickup?

Re: Shipping

I forgot to mention, you need a secure place to do pickups.  eBay will NOT have your back on an INR (item not received) if it was not received b/c it was stolen from your porch.  IDK where you got that idea.  You are required to get your item to your buyer!   They will only have your back on an INR if it gets a Delivered scan & the buyer is still claiming INR.  Which btw, a lot of those are legit INR's, but eBay WILL have your back on those.

Re: Shipping

Everyone has their own way of shipping things.   There is no single answer.   A lot depends on how many packages you usually ship, how far you are from a post office, or the value of the packages.  If you sell inexpensive things, you might be comfortable with pick up or post office drop off  but if you sell expensive things, you might want to take them inside the post office to be scanned in.

Pick-up is great as long as you have a secure place to put your packages waiting for pickup.   I remember reading on here one time that a seller put a bunch of packages out for his mailman to pick up and they disappeared.  He was out his merchandise and had to refund all those buyers.

Many sellers take their packages to the post office.  If they are pre-paid, you can just leave them and they will be scanned in later.  This works great but if something does go awry and one doesn't get scanned in, problems can arise.   Same with blue boxes.  I think somebody posted on here recently about putting two packages in a blue box and only one got scanned in.   They couldn't find the other one.

Myself, I take my  packages to the post office (I use eBay labels) and stand in line to get an acceptance receipt.  That way, the tracking shows immediately that the packages are in the hands of the post office.   But...I'm in a small town and usually I don't have to stand in line very long.

Re: Shipping

I agree! I should have clarified. I have seen scanned items lost by the PO and you know they are there somewhere…. In the Twighlight Zone!  People getting things 3 months after mailed. That’s what I meant. I will NEVER leave an unattended package! I’ve been a victim of the pirates! Thank you for your concern. Everyone needs to heed that warning!

@rlradski  They're supposed to, though there are limits if you're on a rural route, which again, can be a 1200 house subdivision in the middle of the city.  Do they?  Will they?  It depends on your carrier.  Do you have a good regular carrier?  Do you have a lot of subs?  It all depends.  I had a 8x12 4 color laminated sign telling them to scan pkgs.  Did it happen?  Sometimes.  If it was a sub, almost never.

Lots of people go to the PO & watch them being scanned, but on the downside, you gotta wait in line.  The easier way is just use the APC Kiosk & scan them yourself.
