why is the seller penalized on performance when you box and ship the item out on the same day yet fed ex or ups does not scan it on time even though it is out of our hands on time or even early? sometimes it is the fine line between top rated and above average on ratings.

Re: Shipping

You need to get the packages scanned when you drop them off or get picked up.

Have a great day.

Re: Shipping

eBay has no way of knowing when an item was actually boxed up, or when it was dropped off without a scan.

eBay can tell exactly when it was scanned, though.

If you need a scan, make sure you get a scan.

Re: Shipping

I guess it's because they have no way of telling who the people that really ship and those that create a label and never ship are. They have to have an even playing field regardless. I've had items not scanned on pick up, especially if my carrier is off that day. But, they also go by the delivery date, so you may be saved by that defect if delivered on time. All of my dings are from late delivery, even those scanned on time. Go figure.

Re: Shipping

I don't hand over my package unless it is scanned.

I literally hand my packages one by one to the carrier as the carrier scans them. I help the carrier by walking all my pkgs to their truck, handing it to them face up, proper orientation, etc. I do them a favor, they do me a favor. I see every pkg is scanned.

Why do I do this? EBay "dinging" my account for late shipment is the least of my worries. I want the liability off of me. There are packages I have insured, and the insurance doesnt kick in unless the carrier has scanned it. I have seen packages travel from my front door (Chicago) to Miami or LA or NY without a single registered scan. So if my carrier doesnt scan it, and it travels all the way across the country before it gets scanned... that's a whole lot of opportunities for my package to be stolen or lost, and my insurance to be useless, null & void. That doesn't even begin to touch on "buyer experience" and "buyer expectations".

Recently scanned a pkg at the kiosk at the post office. Normally the post office scans the pkg as accepted themselves when they grab it from the bin. This pkg went from scanned at the kiosk, all the way to a distribution center a couple states away with 0 scans during that week it was MIA. Thank god i did the kiosk scan so the buyer knows i dropped it off...otherwise I bet I would have heard about it because they wouldve thought i delayed their pkg over a week by sitting on it!

When the self-scan feature was added to the USPS Kiosk I was told it was specifically for eBay sellers. Your self-scan is recognized by eBay as the first scan and saves you from late shipment dings. Still needs that second "official scan" for any insurance claims.

Self-scan is amazing around Christmas when counter lines are out the door and mail from the bins are sometimes not scanned and held for days outside the processing center until the USPS catches up.

Re: Shipping

Correct. My complaint about the week's delay after kiosk was the "buyer experience" aspect. If it wasnt for the kiosk scan, buyer may have thought i waited a week to ship. Again, eBay dings are the least of my concern. It's first insurance (money), and second is appearances (buyer's impression of my shipping times).

I only do kiosk for things that are uninsured. Anything that is insured gets scanned by a human being before I let it out of my sight. Those I will wait in line for if needed. The kiosk is a wonderful thing for just a quick in and out and proving to a buyer I did something with their pkg LOL.
