Setting a reserve on an existing listing

I'm new to ebay. I created a listing but didn't set a reserve. I received a couple bids on the item. I read up and it said that in order to change my listing to include a reserve, I must cancel all bids. I did this and now it won't allow me to click on the the box next to "Auction Reserve Price" in the listing I would like to change. Anyone know why I can't make this change?

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

I'm not sure how to fix your technical problem, perhaps someone else can, but FYI, bidders don't like reserves.

Unless it's something in high demand where you are guaranteed to get competitive bids, it's usually better to start the bidding at the lowest price you are willing to accept.

WOW, I have never seen an auction that had a Make Offer option before !

I thought that the Make Offer option was only offered on Fixed Price listings !

I am guessing that you can't set a reserve price because you have it listed with a Make Offer option.

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

Don't use reserve price just start the bidding at the prices you want.

Since your brand new to eBay I recommend you read some of the posts on these boards about being scammed.

As your new you will be a TARGET of scammers who will bid on your high priced items shoes. Get them shipped then open a dispute on you. eBay will refund the buyer and you may get no item back or the wrong item back. This has been going on for sometime. I advise you not to start brand new with such high priced listings.

It would be better to get a feel for the market place on here and get some good feedback behind you. It might be safer listing stuff $10- $30 where by if you get a scam buyer its not as big as a loss as $200+

Be careful to with shipping. Have you set shipping policy blocking places you won't send to and stating the cost of shipping everywhere else. Currently I see Shipping not specified.

You are not offering returns be aware this makes no difference if buyer opens item not as described case on you eBay will make you accept a return. If you don't they will refund the buyer with your money.

Do some homework before getting caught out. There is plenty of good info in posts in this community board. I recommend you be familiar with all the pros and cons before aiming so high with selling high priced items

Just trying to save you heart ache of getting scammed and loosing your money and the product. The pair on at $450 is a big risk!

Where did you read that? The policy on what you can revise is based on whether an auction has received any bids.

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/listings/revising-listing?id=4356

You need to just end that listing so when you relist you can correct the opening bid price (or set a reserve) but more importantly  so you can correct the Item Specifics error.

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

@racbl-23  I just learned yesterday that even though bids are cancelled the item still recieved on so changes are prevented ... it makes no sense but that's apparently the way it works ...

Now, about Reserve price on auctions, EVERY time you list or relist eBay will charge you a fee for that upgrade whether the item sells or not.  It is better to set the starting price of an auction just like a fixed price listing whereby the price with ONE bid will make you a profitable sale ... then if you get more bids you earn more profit.

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

Many bidders know that once that first bid is placed that the auction is frozen and no major changes can be made. Can you imagine the confusion if sellers were able to cancel bids and change listings willy nilly?

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

Thank you for your input! I'll say, currently, the best thing about eBay seems to be the seller community! The user interface and help aides throughout the site are fairly useless.

Thanks again!

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

I can definitely see where that might create some confusion but just as the seller is supposed to be responsible and make sure the item is as described, the buyer should need to be thorough in their purchase of the item.

Good point ... our situation was the first bid plus a message from the Buyer asking for Local Pickup ... Buyer was a low FB count so they don't know how things work ... anyway, with a little back and forth they have placed their bid again.  We'll have to see if the Local Pick up can be added AFTER the sale (if that Buyer wins the Auction).

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

The listing can't be altered after it ends.  You'll be able to send the buyer an invoice with the shipping cost adjusted to zero. And ask him to bring cash. Then you can mark it as paid and shipped.

Re: Setting a reserve on an existing listing

There is a new post on how scammer does a charge back on expensive items and gets to keep the item even when it was sent tracked. You should read the article shown at this link. I posted the OPs post as well below

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/Ebay-Seller-protection-Good-Luck-Your-on-your-own/m-p/28858969...

A warning to all sellers Beware of a loophole in Ebay's and Paypals seller protection.

If a item is sold and the buyer pays using a credit card through paypal they can then contact their credit card company and request a charge back without returning the item. If a buyer uses this method and does not request the return through ebay you are "S.O.L." Ebay's response is "there is nothing we can do about it" . Paypal's response is pretty much the same. I sold a $1375.00 item shipped the item through ebay so there is tracking info showing the buyer received it. 30 days after the sale the buyer contacts his credit card company and claims the item was diffrent than listed. The funds were removed from my paypal account and the buyer will not respond to any attempts to contact him.  I filed a response through paypal to the charge back but I have no direct contact to the buyers bank that issued the credit card. Neither ebay or paypal will assist in trying to contact the buyer to have the item returned or supply me with any infomation that may be helpful in contacting the buyer. While the chargeback dispute is being reviewed by the issuing bank I have been told by both ebay and paypal that it is highly likely that the buyer will win the dispute and not be instructed to return the item. So much for "Seller Protection"
