Selling Online Platform SSI

If anyone wondering if you get ssi check every month you can still sell online if your couple you must report it but if your single with not kids you have a limit how much u can make but in most the time you really don’t have to report to it. They check your work wages and not your other resources. I went there to my local ssa office my limit 800 month in work extra income I get like eBay other platform they never check that if ur single.  Leave your opinion or feedback if anyone else get ssi

Hi, @behixso_62,

If you sell things on eBay for profit, then you have to report the profit (gains) as income on your 1040 to the IRS.

It also counts as income if you are receiving SSI. This program is for people who are not able to earn income. If you can sell items on eBay for profit, then you are running a business and earning income.

SSI:

Supplemental Security Income. Social Security administers this program. We pay monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are disabled, blind, or age 65 or older.

Re: Selling Online Platform SSI

I think it would be more prudent if you were to find a local support group with which to discuss this type of concern.  I'm not sure that an open forum or an online chat is an appropriate place to exchange the information you may be seeking.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Perhaps if Brains were described as an APP, many people would use them more often.

Respect, like money, is only of 'worth' when it is earned - with all due respect, it can not be ordained, legislated or coerced. Anonymous

Re: Selling Online Platform SSI

Here's what the Social Security administration has to say:

General earned income exclusion
The first $65 (up to a maximum of $85 if the individual has no income other than earnings) of any monthly earned income plus one-half of remaining earnings are excluded for SSI benefit computation purposes. This general earned income exclusion is intended to help offset expenses incurred while working.

For 2019, if an individual has only earnings income, then he or she could earn up to $1,627 per month and still be eligible for an SSI benefit. However, if an individual has monthly earnings of $1220 or more in 2019, then the person would be considered to be engaging in substantial gainful activity and would probably not meet initial eligibility requirements for SSI disability benefits (unless he or she is blind).

You need to report your eBay income if you are making a profit. But you also get to deduct expenses like eBay fees, postage for shipping items to your buyers, and even the original purchase price of the item.  You're probably also eligible for the "Earned income credit" which can put a few extra dollars in your pocket.

You've received some great advice and links to read on this thread.  It really is in your best interest to update yourself so that you keep yourself out of legal trouble.  Messing with the IRS is not a good thing and can backfire on you with serious and significant consequences.

FYI, it is WORK to sell on Ebay.  Different that working at someone else's business and pulling a paycheck from them, but this would be YOUR business and you would be WORKING for yourself.  Different ways to earn money, but work all the same.  And reportable income to IRS as well.

Re: Selling Online Platform SSI

I qualify but cannot get SSI because we are apparently wealthy. It would be wrong to get full SSI and hide eBay income. They find out everything. My dear elderly aunt some years ago unwittingly neglected to report 2 small life insurance checks she got and they took her checks away for a few years when they found out. Her daughter was murdered, her grandson ran over and killed by his parents a couple months before the murder and she didn’t realize she had to report that money that was used for their funerals. She ended up in a mess with no money. May she RIP.

Re: Selling Online Platform SSI

It’s not for people who can’t earn any income and that’s harmful false information you’re spreading. You’re allowed to earn income on SSI and SSDI, there’s just limits.
