Selling Fees

Haven't sold on ebay in over a year.   Have been selling on other local social media sites.  Had a Nikon camera for sell and decided to try eBay.  Sold the camera only to discover that eBay now charges a 13.25% selling fee.  Sold the camera for $450.  EBay charged a $67 selling fee.  What is worse, they charged the 13.25% on shipping and sales tax.  What a rip-off.  I know they have a link to disclose their cheesy selling fee tactics, but they should at least show those selling fees BEFORE you list an item and give the seller a choice if they want to proceed with the listing.  Had they done so, I would not have listed on eBay and gone with another selling site.  Which is why they don't reveal these fees any more than they have to.    Will NEVER sell another item on eBay.  Plenty of other sites to choose from - Facebook, Next Door, Offer Up, etc.   Shame on you eBay for not being more transparent with what the true costs are going to be to a seller once they sell an item.  Never again.

If meeting up with random internet people to sell stuff is in your wheelhouse, more power to you.

Good luck.

eBay's wisdom is to make the $67 from you today, and lose you as a buyer and seller for life which could have led to a million dollars.

Selling Fees

The seller fees are way to high for the amount help a seller gets from eBay and the hoops they have to jump through to keep or get their money back when a buyer scams them.

Maybe if half the fees were charged to buyers the scammers would leave since they have to pay a cut too. I mean i don't see it affecting legit buyers having a small fee if the sellers fee is also reduced since most sellers price things knowing there is a pretty large chunk taken out. I mean auctions charge buyer fees on a % of it.

It's not ebay's fault you failed to read up on seller fees. They are posted in policies and at the bottom of the listing form just prior to hitting the list your item button it says "final value fee applies when your item sells" along with a link to click to see what the fees are.. So don't blame ebay because you didn't do your research first.

Selling fees | eBay

Bottom line ebay free to list, not free to sell.

Good luck with your other ventures.

Out of curiosity what did you think the fees were going to be?  5%? 10%?

"Maybe if half the fees were charged to buyers the scammers would leave since they have to pay a cut too."

I suggest you are looking at this wrong.

eBay's User Agreement specifies that their fees are charged to the seller.

Lots of sellers take the position that their buyers do  pay the fees.  I am one of them.

I know what is says. I'm saying maybe if there was a fee buyers had to pay as well we would get more legit buyers. Go to an auction each party pays fees.

Pretty sure the fees are clearly outlined in more than one place on eBay.  The only problem is that there is no way to force a seller to read them before starting to sell.  It's the old "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" and you also can't force him to read the fee structure information.

ebay is present oriented, insufficient concern on creating a happier user experience. Most sellers are regarded as replaceables

We have been involved in auctions for years as buyers/sellers. While in many cases both sides pay fees, fees are routinely waved by Auction Houses based on value of item(s) being sold or bought.

I have actually met a lot of interesting and nice people this way and exchanges are always done in a public arena, usually an exchange area at a local police station.  I have a number of customers that I still keep in contact with and a few that I engage in social activities with.

It might be a good idea to look at the fees BEFORE you sell something.

Selling Fees

There are several aspects to this the first being from the sellers side. The eBay fees and how they are applied have remained pretty constant for quite some time. I list on multiple sites and forums and generally price my items in accordance with the fees associated with those sites to maintain my profit and/or ROI. In your example if I had listed the camera at $450 on eBay I probably would have listed it on FB for around $400, or a little less since, at the moment, there are no fees on FB.

I am also not a big fan of the xx% in Federal and State income taxes I have to pay on my net revenue but that too has been in place for years and I continue to pay those but grumble every year.

Looking at eBay from the other side of the river, as a buyer, I seldom buy anything on eBay these days for a couple of reasons. First I can generally find the item cheaper elsewhere, either on another ecommerce site or locally in a B&M store. The no sales tax advantage ecommerce sites had over B&M stores evaporated after the Supreme Court decision in Wayfair vs South Dakota and the subsequent passage of the individual state laws. However the biggest factor is the exponential rate at which shipping costs have risen over the last couple of years. Sellers either bake those costs into their pricing and offer free shipping or the shipping costs are shown to the buyer in advance and added to the item price at purchase. While I am protected by the MBG as a buyer I would rather not have to deal with lost packages or shipping damage.

EBay is a publically traded company and their only mission is to maximize the profit to their shareholders and I do not begrudge them for that. They have a lot working against them at the moment and need to adjust and adapt in what is becoming a VERY highly competitive marketplace.

What a rip-off.  I know they have a link to disclose their cheesy selling fee tactics

Tactics?  It's not  tactic, it's their fee.

McDonalds sells a big mac for $4. It's right on their menu.  Is that a tactic too?

but they should at least show those selling fees BEFORE you list an item

Like this?
