Sellers should learn not to say NO.

I need six  1" glass marbles for a project.

I came across a listing for 2 pounds of 1" glass marbles for $23.99 with free shipping.

I'm not sure how many marbles are in 2 pounds but i'm sure t's way more than i need. 

I messaged the seller and explained how i only need 6 marbles. If he would be willing to sell me 6,  let me know how much.

The seller replied with "sorry such a small amount is not cost worthy for me to sell".  Why would he say that without knowing how much i'm willing to pay for 6 of them?  Why not make me an offer?  6 marbles for $5 or 6 marbles for $10 or 6 marbles for $20 ... whatever he thinks is worth his time and effort?   But to just say "NO" is very poor business sense in my opinion.

He doesn't need to know how much you're willing to pay. He knows how much you're not willing to pay. If we were that seller, you would be better off just buying the lot because we would have to charge you more than the asking price to cover labor expenses to change the listing. 

We have employees. In some situations, it would be better financially for us to pay an employee to throw the item in the trash than pay an employee to comply with a customer's request.  In those situations, we save everybody time and just say no thanks.

OMG what is wrong with you guys?   Every whim?  I'm simply saying in my opinion that the seller saying "no" BEFORE he hears the offer is not too smart.  Ask any (successful) business man.  Geeeeez!

Thanks castle!  I did find my marbles.  I needed them to be glass, 1" in diameter and i only needed about 6 of them.

I should just let this thread burn itself out.  I'm losing my marbles!  😃

Would you do it for $10?  Would you do it for $20.  At some point you would do it.  So the answer shouldn't be no.

That's like someone offering to buy your car "name your price" and you saying it's not for sale.

And some of us are saying the buyer not making the offer up front, along with the request is ....well, less likely to get an affirmative answer. Again, WHY didn't you make your offer up front? That would have been a courteous thing to do, especially since you are asking for a special favor.

Great story!    Here's my version of the same story....

The guy has 152,982 marbles.  Grab 6 of them. Take 7 seconds to tell me he'll charge me $9.95 (or whatever) + $4.95 S&H. I will either say YES or NO. If i say NO he's lost 7 seconds of his time. But instead he say's NO he's not interested.  Yes, it is a goofy world we live in!!!!!

Ok, so this isn't a smaller seller. 

You expect a larger, probably very busy seller, to bend over backwards for one small, likely insignificant to them sale to make you happy...

cottage books: The answer to your question is - i don't know.  I guess i could have offered up front.  I didn't really think it mattered.  I was going to wait to see what the seller said, then respond. I was actually kind of surprised by the response. Kind of like when i ask sellers how much to ship to Hawaii and they respond with they do not ship to Hawaii, period, for any amount of money.

And for the record, since i'm getting totally "beat up" on this thread, but i totally respect the sellers decision. It's his items. It's his listings.  It's his prerogative.  I just don't agree with it or understand it.

So, if the seller had responded with "Well, that depends, how much are you willing to pay for me to create a new listing and sell you six marbles?" what would your response have been?

I think many sellers would agree that accommodating buyer requests , when practical, is a good business policy. But it isn't always practical. Hopefully one take away from this thread is that buyers should recognize that no seller wants to deal with needless back and forth. An up front: I only need six marbles and will pay $20 for them" has a much better chance of getting a "yes" than "I need six marbles. Will you sell me six?"

Did you just say about 6 ?

So if the seller had said yes, and quoted you a price for 6 would you then have suggested a different quantity?
