Sellers Beware Porch Pickers Have Started

I have had 2 porch thefts in my neighborhood in the last 5 days, Are sellers responsible if someone has their package stolen from their porch?, I have a ring doorbell to keep track of my own porch.

No, if delivery shows delivered, sellers are covered.

Be sure to tell the neighbors to report to the PO, if it's USPS..........they will set up surveillance on the route.  At least I've seen it reported that they do....

It's not clear whether it's the buyer's or the seller's porch from which the theft occurs.

If a seller leaves an outgoing package for their mail carrier to pick up and it's stolen before pickup, YES, seller is responsible.

If the buyer's item is delivered and stolen from their porch, NO, seller is not responsible.

Found some items on my porch the other day that looks like someone was rooting through stolen goods. Left a bunch of crap.

What are your thoughts on the Ring doorbell @meme6253 ? Thought about getting one but know little about how secure it is. I would assume you need the internet connection as well.

No.  Sellers only have to get it delivered. Once delivered risk of loss transfers to the buyer.  So if it's stolen , rained on or trampled by yaks, it's not the seller's problem after delivery.

I would also tell all your buyers to be aware pckage theft is increasing due to the holidays and to be wary/alert for anything they are buying online, not just from you.  Maybe even suggest they tell their PO to hold their packages for pickup in case its happened to them before.

Ring doorbell isn't really going to stop the porch theft. It just means you MIGHT get a video of someone (probably in a hoodie) taking your package. The package will still be gone.  You are never getting that package back.

I like the ring, I find it to be very secure, I haven't had any big issues with it, & yes you would need an internet connection

Agree with all of that...

We (and several other family members) all have Ring doorbells on our houses, and they function fine, but as noted as far as security goes, the best you're likely to see is a sharp video of someone in a hoodie walking off with your package.

The doorbell camera can make use of your internet connection to transmit video to your smartphone, and has its own speaker for two-way conversation with whoever is at your front door, regardless of whether you're at home or somewhere else. Its neighborhood functions can let you share alerts and video snippets with other Ring owners in your vicinity, so there is some heads-up functionality there if someone nefarious is operating in your area (although most of our neighbors use it for coyote alerts, which gets a little tiresome after a while).

Our Ring model can use its downward vision capability to send us a specific alert that a package has been delivered, and if I'm elsewhere I can text someone to go and retrieve it, so there's that, but in general it's up to you to provide a secure delivery spot. Your typical bad guy probably knows what a Ring doorbell looks like already, and simply dresses appropriately so you can see him but you can't recognize him.

Okay, once the carrier has scanned the package as Delivered, it's no longer your responsibility as far as an Item Not Received dispute (due to a subsequent porch theft) is concerned. It is the buyer's responsibility to provide a safe location for deliveries, not just to protect against the weather but also to protect against porch thefts, or whatever other hazard(s) exist at his address.

The carrier's Delivered scan is basically the transition point between the seller's responsibility and the buyer's.
