When I search on eBay for "peanuts die cut christmas" (not using the quotes)
I get 23 results, but item #273114825702 is not in my results. The search terms are in the title of the item, yet it is not returned by my search. Why?

Not that this helps but its a perfect example of just how useless the entire ebay search system is. There is no reason for this behavior.
Icing on the cake is that Google can find it no problem using the same search parameters...lololol...what a sick joke
Look a few down in the first page of results.

I don't know as it could be several reasons.
If the listing isn't active, it won't show. It might have ended.
If you looked at that listing before, Cassini may have decided not to show you that listing again because you viewed it and did not buy or bid.
If it is your listing, sellers sometimes can't see their own listings.
I put anything I am remotely interested in in my Watch List. You may also be able to find listings you viewed in your recently viewed under my Ebay, but those age off. This is security in case you aren't shown a listing again. If need be, I go in and weed things out if I run out of space in my Watch List.

OK I think it's because I used the term die cut and the item title says die cuts (plural)
Seems to this old dummy that die cut should also bring up die cuts, but what do I know.
I have noticed that. Previously that would not have happened. Die cut would have brought up die cuts. Now it seems sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.
You're not a dummy; your expectation is a reasonable one.

Listing is active, not mine, and returns if I used die cuts (plural)

That's not it. The listing has both "cuts" and "cut" in the title.

I'll accept that. Just wondering why.

I didn't notice that. Even more of a mystery to me now.

eBay may be treating the words "die cut" as a single term "diecut". Substituting diecut in your search also produces 23 results.
I have tried several variations and combinations, and searching "diecuts" does find the missing listing.
But trying to combine the two searches using the usual techniques (die.cut,die.cuts) has not worked for me very well. Curious.

You are correct, search used to bring up any plurals, too
Makes me concerned for other little variations they corrected/tied together a number of years ago

I have also had problems bringing up items when using the exact same search terms. Seeing less doesn't help.

This kind of thing happens in my searches often. It makes me feel that the search function has been so meddled with that it is broken. Sometimes I find the "missing" listing when i switch categories but keep the same keywords.

Yep, that's where I found the listing originally. I think they overthought Cassini
