Scanned Packages and Stats

I know this may sound petty but it irritates me that I get dinged on the fact carriers haven't scanned packages. How am I supposed to control this? I mean really, I have 8 that weren't scanned and I feel this is just playing games with our stats.

I haven't approached eBay on this situation but I do think they need to take another look at this problem.

OK, so you are shipping with tracking and getting scans on drop off.

Then you said, "Eight of the 8 were entered into ebay with the tracking numbers"

- Are you buying postage at the PO and manually entering tracking on eBay?

- If yes, are you entering tracking within your handling time or entering tracking labe?

Then you said, "Now it is just a burr under my saddle that this was not taken more seriously (about 2-3 years ago)."

I'm very confused by that statement. Are you saying these 8 packages are from 2-3 years ago and not recent? If so, they would not be affecting your current seller standard rating.

That's a lot of packages to never receive any scans. Are you shipping with tracking? If so, the problem might be figuring out why so many of your packages aren't getting any scans at all. Could you describe your physical packages and the shipping service used and the type of shipping label? Maybe we can help you solve this.

Leaving packages where shipping picks them up and you are hoping it gets scanned...that's like Russian Roulette....

I gave away with everything needing to be scanned...really unrealistic.

So I will never become a TRS by eBay standards...but by my feedbacks I am.

So instead of the what 20 % discount....I can get that 20+% discount by getting USA face value stamps buying them from USA sellers on eBay.

And what's really funny...my items without tracking reach the buyer 2-3 days cross country...from the positive feedback received....I got to love my 'repeat buyers'...as well...

@meekamaye ,

This is 100% in your control. If you are that worried about it then I would bring the packages to the post office and have them scanned at the counter. If you use UPS there are thousands of UPS stores you can bring them.

My packages never get scanned by the person who picks them up and often don't get a scan until they hit the distribution center.  They go out with the hundreds of bulk packages from another company and there is just no way they are getting scanned by the pickup person, EVER.

So, I list 3 day handling time, but I ship the next day 90 percent of the time. This keeps my shipped on time above 97 percent.

I have done the financial math on waiting in line to get them scanned at the counter every day, vs just getting the pickup that takes no time and probably doesn't get scanned on pickup and it makes absolutely no sense to go wait in the line.  It is the financial equivalent of taking 3-8  weeks of unpaid vacation per year, depending on how long that routine takes you on a daily basis.

I fully agree that would solve the problem of an initial scan, as would using a SCAN sheet for carrier pickup. But the OP indicated 8 packages that weren't scanned. To me that says they were not scanned at all during any point on the journey.

The Tracking Uploaded on Time & Validated standard requires (1) tracking uploaded on time and (2) a scan at any point on the package's journey - even a final delivery scan qualifies.

If the OP's seller standard is affected, that says they are not getting any scans. While getting the initial scan as you suggested will solve that problem, it will not solve a problem about lack of protection on non-receipt claims and disputes when there's no delivery scan. OP did not mention this as a problem, but my brain went there ... thinking through the process. 😛

How you're supposed to control it is to watch your pkg be scanned or scan it yourself at an APC kiosk.    I learned this lesson years ago when a LOT of pkgs didn't get scanned.   After a 7+ year fight with my local PO over several issues, I just determined I had to DIY.  Luckily I have 3 kiosks open 24 hours.

ETA- I would never wait for the Sort Center.  Items get to my sort center after midnight, so always next day.

Talk to your post office postmaster...I assume you only have one post office with a population of 1500.

Ask 'what can I do to have my items scanned when received?'...to the person in charge.

I live in a big city of 1 million and know the names of those who have worked in my post office for quite a while.

Sometimes, interaction between people can help in person.

And I also know my mailman...

I am not able to leave anything for pick up. My mailbox isn't big enough so I need to go to the post office. It is a small town of 1500 people, I have known these workers for years and went to school with one of them. My packages get delivered, are never lost and you can tell by my feedback. (I also sold on Etsy with no problems) My packages make it to their destinations in good time, 2-4 days. I live in MN so my packages go to St Paul and then on from there.

I have to take my packages to the post office. There is no room in my mailbox for the outgoing packages. That way I see them scanned in front of me. I am not worried, just irritated. I never use UPS, the nearest store is over 60-120 miles away.

I'm confused.  You're saying there's no scans & how is that your fault, but then you're saying you scan everything or watch it be scanned, so there is a scan?  Which is it?  And what exactly is the problem?  This is really unclear.

In my town I walk right up to the counter 95% of the time, no waiting. Can't get everything in my mail box so I have a 5 day handling time but usually ship within three days. I have been at this since 1998 and sold on Etsy, too. When I was working there were times I used other post offices in the three state area but never had a problem with scanning. Some post offices got to know me well. LOL
