I just made my very first sale. Item was listed as an Auction but i accepted “Best Offer”. I received an email from ebay stating the Buyer has requested an invoice, wants to pay via PayPal and to discuss condition of item via his email before sending payment..see attached. Is this a scam? How should i proceed?

On ebay, Anything out of the ordinary you should walk away.

You can send an invoice to the buyer off your seller hub page. He already knows 'how much he owes,

eBay has already sent him an invoice.

You're probably being set up.

Check your ebay messages and see if that invoice request shows up. I bet not.

Definitely a classic scam.

The buyer would send a message to your PayPal email address, pretending to be from PayPal and telling you that you have been paid. Sometimes it specifies that the money won't show up in your PayPal account until you provide proof that the item has shipped. And sometimes they have a story and want to pay extra for express shipping, but that's just so they have the item before you realize you've been scammed.

A real buyer can use PayPal to pay through eBay, no special request or arrangements are needed. You can even see PayPal as an option at the top of every listing.

I'd mark any of these as an "Accepted Solution." They are all spot on all though probably would be fair to give @dirk12955 as the first poster as the Accepted Solution although @nobody*s_perfect gave the very detailed answer and @mg152 just got right to the point and didn't waste any words.

The Accepted Solution count towards a badge for those that likes the badges and treasures them and stares at them fondly every day once in the morning before getting out of bed and once at night getting into bed.

Not that I do....

Yes you wait the 4 days and cancel the sale for non payment. BLOCK the buyer, and relist.

Just close it out as an unpaid item. Wait 4 full days, then the list of reasons for canceling the transaction will include "Buyer hasn't paid." And then you can relist. This process can be automated in your site preferences, even including a relist if you like. Details here, but IMHO you should ignore the section about contacting the buyer, especially in this case:

Yes, if you have automatic Unpaid Item Assistant turned on (I think that is the default) then it will automatically cancel the transaction AND report the buyer for non payment, if the buyer doesn't after 4 days. All payments are required to go through eBay Checkout, and the buyer can use PayPal there if they want to.

If it doesn't cancel automatically by the 5th day, then you may need to do it yourself. You can relist it once this transaction has been cancelled.

You can "Sell similar" right now to relist the item. And then when the clock runs out you can cancel the original order for non-payment. The clock absolutely will run out, they will not pay for the order.

On that item, they would probably tell you they are buying it as a gift and they want you to a dd a gift card to the package and want it shipped overnight and they'll pay extra for your troubles.

They want your email address so they can send you a fake email saying that you had been paid and the funds would show in your account as soon as tracking has been provided.

By the time you found out you had been scammed, it's to late.

I probably wouldn't chance it though. Just play it safe and wait the four days then relist. But I agree, I think the clock is going to run out on this one and there is no way they are going to pay. But still...
