It is entirely likely the original posts for autos were posted on other sites for sale and the only part eBay played in the investigation was eBay acknowledging the scammers were not employed by eBay.

You are correct. The car ads were not on ebay. It's the same type of scam where people come here asking how to get their money back for gift cards they sent for a car ad on Craigslist or FB.

Not Surprised at all - Just sharing and adding verbage for effect - I Have Not been surprised by anything ebay has done since they integrated best match search back in late 2008 - We were selling Comic Books back then - hundreds of thousands of them - Our sales were reduced by nearly 50% overnight...and it got worse from there...Quit in Early 2009 for 5-6 years and then started a new account for selling as a hobby - Been selling on this site since early 2000's

Only been selling for 6+ years...but I have to say that eBay is (IMHO) in the hands of too many that believe they can operate any way that they see fit...as long as their name isn't attached to any wrong doing that may happen on THEIR SITE...again...JMHO!!!

I agree with you.   Ebay claims they do something about buyer scammers but

since there is no transparency, I can 't see that they do anything.

And stories like this prove ebay isn't doing anything about it.

We as sellers need to be able to filter out scammers by their buying habits.

We need to block out buyers that excessively do returns, and file for refunds.

Sometimes i read about these ebay scams and rather than feel sorry for the victims, i say to myself "how could they have been so stupid?"  With the gift cards and wire transfers and fake emails, who falls or that?

I guess as long as there are people out there falling for it, people will be trying to pull it off.

10.6 million dollar reasons this scam is still going strong it seems.

I wounder if they got all of the accounts these folks had set up... doubt it...

As for eBay: they did not have a thing to do with it from what I read.

Yep its a steal of a deal to steal from you:

and its still going stronger than that bunny..

I realize that but don't you think eBay probably received more than one call in the three years about people impersonating eBay and scamming them out of their money? People who called probably got an response something like it is not really us, never took down any information and simply ignored the problem rather than getting involved. It did not impact their bottom line so they just ignored it. Sort of like the person noticing the neighbors house is on fire and not calling 911 because it's not their house.

Problem is that the ebay gift card scam makes them money, since they can only be used on ebay.

However, a responsible company wouldn't let their name be dragged thru the mud on all of these scams - and would put up all kinds of ads and warnings on these other sites regarding that ebay has NO 'ebay warehouse' and will not 'ship a car for free for an inspection period'.

And 10.6 million from 850 people is over 12K per person on average.

The day you can find a buyer who is scamming thousands of dollars and thousands of sellers is the day they too will get caught. Ebay would and does not allow a buyer to continually file snads and scam sellers.
