It seems that the general consensus is that this is the slowest it has been sales wise on the platform. In regards to my own store, I'm looking to see if I'm doing something wrong?

I'm not sure if it is because I listed a very expensive dress, which is something I normally dont sell, in addition to adding free shipping to it. Additionally, I also just added the discount shipping to see if that would help sales. Is it because I implemented two changes to my store that my sales are slow as a result? I have heard that even the smallest change can flip the algorithm and I'm wondering if that's it.

We list in demand items (100% sell through rate), we list 30 items consistently everyday, and we have everything to ensure we are top rated plus. I'm used to selling 15-20 on ebay alone and the past week and a half feels like July this year. Just trying to see if I should be doing something else.

Where did you hear this, and what algorithm are you talking about?

eBay has thousands of algorithms.

@freedomfinders

You sell clothing.  A very oversaturated category. You have had over 60+ sales in November alone.  That's awesome to me. I personally don't see the problem.  You're doing light years better than a lot of sellers.  Congratulations and keep up the good work!

Happy Selling

IMHO that question far way to vague for anyone here to give a meaningful answer.

For example, eBay has an algorithm that selects promoted listings to fill the limited number of promoted listing slots. If one of the changes you made was to stop promoting listings or reduce the percentage you pay to promote them, that change could definitely affect sales.

eBay also has an algorithm that give a slight boost to items with free shipping and items with a generous return policy. If one of the changes you made was to remove free shipping or your return policy, that could affect placement and sales.

I could come up with a thousand other examples of how changes to a store might affect sales. But since you seem reluctant to tell us what changes you made to your store and which 'algorithm' you are referring to. But I don't have a week of spare time to do that.

The quality of the responses that you get on this board are generally proportional to the amount of relevant detail you provide as part of the question.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it 🙂 I actually dont think clothing is oversaturated, it just depends on what you are selling 🙂 I do this full time so I just have noticed a downtrend and I'm just wondering why but thank you so much 🙂

It is not because of any insignificant change in your listings.

Pretty much every retailer out there, online and offline is heavily discounting, advance Black Friday sales are everywhere. For the consumers that have money to spend they are bombarded with offers and  i mean real deals not the fake ones that many eBay sellers try to fool people with.

You've sold 1200+ items in the past 90 days. What are you complaining about? Of course there are always slower times and better times in retail.

Clothing is absolutely one of the most over saturated categories. In general the bulk of all retail is centered around clothing. The fact that despite this, you still have over 60 sales is amazing. Used items are not in high demand around the Christmas season. People may buy something for themselves. but in general they will be looking for new items to gift. Often from places with easy returns, and extended return policies, just incase an item doesn’t fit.

We have to consider many other factors too. Housing costs are high. I have family in Florida, and their homeowners insurance TRIPLED, along with much higher property taxes. Things like this affect the disposable income, that people used to use on frivolous self gratification purchases. Clothing being the biggest of these categories.  Also, many people are gravitating away from over consumption. We are heading into a more mindful world.

@freedomfinders

Since you use Buy it Now with the Best Offer feature, you may want to check your preferences that eBay placed on your account.  They were set with a default to YES.  Many buyers find these rather off-putting, since  it limits the payment options they can use, and disallows combining multiple purchases for one shipping price.

Since you are not a new seller, you likely already know how to deal with people who don't pay.  These blocks do wonders to discourage buyers that DO pay.

https://www.ebay.com/bmgt/buyerrequirements

Buyer Payment Requirements

*Require buyers to provide a payment method before they place a bid.

*Require buyers to provide a payment method before they make an offer.

Click submit.

If you DO NOT wish to combine shipping, or NOT give a buyer 96 hours to pay as usual, indeed keep them as yours are set to the YES Default.  Keep in mind, that you are discouraging those that DO pay at the same time.

Yes every poster here says "clothing is over saturated" Jewelry is oversaturated as well as many other catagories. I have been selling clothing for over 21 years full time. If you are selling clothing items that people want, then it will sell. In the past few years, it has become more difficult for a lot of different reasons, to many to list here but ebay glitches, a broken search engine, promoted listings are just the start. It used to be fun selling here but thankfully, I have 5 months left doing this and then is is Ciao Ciao Ebay.

How can you POSSIBLY state that?

There are over 5,600,000 listings in WOMENS TOPS alone??

Yes-sometimes it matters what you sell. I see you have an Ann Taylor tank top. If I search for that, there are 15,000 listings that come up. If I filter for size, then there are 3,500 listings. And if I filter by color there are over 300. I would say you are doing well with your sales given your competition.

The likelihood of whether a buyer will use a highly specific search term when shopping for your item has a dramatic effect on whether its category shows the effects of saturation - too many offers for most buyers to review,

The likelihood of the buyers who are shopping for your item on a mobile device also impacts whether the number of listings will cause saturation effects,

The number of listings on Ebay and most other marketplace sites continues to increase and will increase further if the economy shows more signs of weakness. And the signs of weakness are not limited to those the economists use.

Promotion might be appropriate if you have depth of inventory of your items, but might not have any effect on a wide and shallow inventory. In that case the only tool is to increase the width of your inventory, or price cutting.

The economy isn’t technically showing signs of weakness. It’s quite the opposite. The dynamics however, of the economy are forever changed, in part due to the effects of Covid. The economy is still driving inflation.  The “experts “ want the Fed to force the economy into recession, to curb inflation. Which is a terrible idea. It’s large corporations backing this notion of needing a recession. This will give them a reason to permanently eliminate jobs with AI. I recently retired from this field, and can tell you this plan is well known within the industry. Just like technology was used to replace people during the Great Recession. Only this time it will be much worse, if they get their way.

Regardless, consumer habits are evolving and changing with the times. Less disposable income, will indeed mean fewer purchases of unnecessary items. We also have younger generations living largely in a virtual world, and do not desire the same things past generations did.  High shipping costs make it difficult for small sellers to compete with big sellers like Amazon. All of this indeed has an impact on sales now, and in the future. We are right in the middle of a big shift in technology. No one can predict what that outcome looks like.  Apps are already changing how people shop. I can load a picture and have an app find the best price. The future will undoubtedly be price focused. There will always be a market for unique, but these have always been niche markets, and why many eBay sellers are struggling. Especially as the collectors age out of buying more, and pass on. Times are changing.
