Sales Slump

Has anyone noticed a drastic drop in sales in August of 2018?

Re: Sales Slump

Yes. Been contemplating closing last few months. Even worse all of my sourcing is turning up zero. Thrifts around here have drastically raised prices. My go to thrift store is just ridiculous now. No room to make any profit on most items. Just tired and stressed from it all. Went to an estate sale run by a company of which I've been to their other sales before. Their prices were just ridiculously high. I'm starting to feel this whole gig is less and less worth the time and stress involved. Maybe this just isn't the business for me. I need reliability and knowing I can pay the bills and maybe put a little money away too or I get really stressed out. I haven't been able to save at all this year due to paltry sales and unable to find much sourcing. If you go back through my sales you may disagree and think I've been doing well but I've had to lower many of my items far below what I intended to make when I purchased them. Seems the sales history isn't even reliable any more. So many items don't even sell. I just put them out by the road after a few months.

Yes.  July was pretty good, and on the 31st all sales came to a halt.

I went 11 days without any sales.  Then I scored 1 sale!

In the past couple of days, I made 3 more sales!  And there were watchers on my listings.  I had a good feeling I would get more sales before August is done.

THEN I had to end all listings last night due to Hurricane Lane being on the horizon, right now a Category 4 hurricane.

I know it had to be done, but I'm sad!  And feeling rather adrift.  (And of course very concerned about the hurricane as well.)

Anyway, good luck to you and wishing you many sales in the remaining 8 days in August!

Re: Sales Slump

I personally think people are shopping for school clothes, etc. Its that time of the year. I live in new york and the new york state fair is going on currently and people come from all over, people taking last vacation time before summer up, many things. August last year was slow too. Then picked right up after school started.  My sales are exactly same pattern as a year ago, every month.  Truly tho, I think  August is a little slower for everyone due to what I have mentioned.

Re: Sales Slump

I haven't noticed a sales drop. Only because it's been equally slow every month since springtime! It seems the same each month to me.

Re: Sales Slump

Hey,

We are going through a HUGE sales slump over the past 2 weeks. Not only on eBay, also on our site. We are relatively new to eBay and have had some awesome days, but long slumps in between.

Not sure eBay is the right platform for us.

Let's hope we all pickup sales soon!

Sellers have been coming to this board almost every day for at least five years complaining of a sudden drop in sales.

You are not alone, but also do not appear to be in the majority.

This is definitely true for me. Long gone are the days when I made so much here (on much smaller inventory, at first before there even were stores) that I constantly moved money from PP to my bank account. Now it's the other way because I use my PP card a lot.

It's my other site that makes online sales at all sustainable, and at that I"m not "paying the mortgage" though I do pay for my daughter's credit card, and she's a spendthrift not motivated to get a job.

This month has been a weird one for me, @bargainsalesfreak.   Essentially, my sales had dropped off to a trickle since the end of March.  All of a sudden at the beginning of this month, my sales picked up and I was selling several things in a week.   I was starting to think that whatever rock in the tundra I had been placed under had finally been lifted/shifted, then BAM!  I'm now back to zilch, zero, nada, nothing again.  Haven't had a sale for more than a week.

I ought to know better by now how things go, as there seems to be a weird pattern that occurs at least for me.  Sales will be non-existent, then out of the blue, I will get one or several purchases from international buyers, then sales from the west coast and deep south, usually from the same states.  I know for sure the "gate" has been opened when I get a sale from my home state which *never* happens.  Then, I will get a few more sales from scattered states, and just when you're Happy as Larry, bang, the gate seems to slam shut once again.

When this happens, I have a small collectible item that has broad appeal which I list.  I call it my "Canary in the Cave,"   It *always* sells, and often results in some fairly active bidding or will be snatched up quickly via a BIN.   In nearly four years, I have never had one of them not sell and have to be relisted.  How fast it moves gives me some indication whether something is going on -- whether that be site issues, the mood/buying enthusiasm of shoppers, or that I have apparently been sent to Siberia again -- who knows?    But, if that item sits and lingers, there's no hope anything else I have on offer is going to move.

Well, you guessed it.  This item has been up for days now, has had only three views, no watchers and definitely no sales.  NOT at all the usual response.   So, although I don't know *what* is going on, I do know *something* has been these last couple of weeks since my "mini sales spurt" which I was so happy about -- as you can plainly see in the handy-dandy chart eBay has so graciously provided me:

Sales.jpg

Before anyone chimes in and says the reason why my sales have tanked is because the types of things I sell have low appeal, I don't find that to be a valid reason/excuse as I also sell on several other platforms and the very same items I have on offer here on eBay have sold simultaneously on other sites for more money and for less overhead cost.   So, it's not what I sell, but where.

Bottom line, OP?   I don't really have any advice for you or others, just wanted to weigh in and let you know you're not alone.  Selling here continues to be challenging and a true adventure.  Personally, I could use less "excitement" in my life.   Or, if life IS going to be "exciting" I'd rather it be in the form of *sales*.     😉

Re: Sales Slump

I feel your pain!!! This has never really happened to where I had fewer views until the last month. I finally made my first sale in almost a month. It was a BIN. Then, I practically gave it away at that!!!!

Re: Sales Slump

Last week has been terrible I guess people are spending for back to school and taking advantage of last big sales in offline stores and other online platforms.

Soon all those sales will end and sales on eBay should recover.
