Sales Reported to IRS

Is Ebay going to report  sales income to the IRS? I have heard that anything over $600.00 would be reported and the sellers will get a income form to add to their yearly income taxes. Does anyone know about this or is it just hear say?

Just to reiterate:

  • Form 1099-Ks are actually mailed to the registered address of each seller who qualifies to receive them.
  • The eBay help page provides the correct information, and the Seller Hub is incorrect but is in the process of being updated.

Are those accurate statements?

Additionally, you make reference to " . . . you'll want to be sure you sign up to receive it online." Does a seller have to "sign up" to receive the standard Form 1099-K online, or is that a reference to requesting the Form 1099-K "detailed report" available from eBay?

Thanks again!

I believe @dq3141 may want to follow this thread . . .

Hey @pburn! You can set your account to receive 1099-K forms online only. I'm including a screen shot below of the two options available:

velvetebay_0-1641844897522.png

The eBay help page uses the wording 'total sales' and the FAQ's in the Seller Center currently say 'gross payment amount received'. They will be looking to update the FAQ's verbiage to 'total sales' to align with the help page. Hopefully that will cut out any confusion sellers may be experiencing.

When I said to be sure to sign up online, I was referring to the 1099-K form that will be sent. You can access those options (shown in the screen shot above) by going to Payments > Taxes.

I hope that clarifies things!

Well, I thought I understood, but not now.

Simple question: will every seller who exceeds the 1099k threshold get one physically mailed to them, without having to do anything like opting in for a physical copy?

Re: Sales Reported to IRS

I, too, seem to somehow be more confused than when the conversation began.

velvet@ebay

You implied a person would have "to be sure you sign up to receive it online." The two choices offered in your screenshot both include receiving it online.

How and where is the Form 1099-K delivered to a seller who qualifies if they do absolutely nothing in regard to that screenshot?

Re: Sales Reported to IRS

In other words: which of those two options is the default?

velvetebay_0-1641844897522.png

And since both of the options include online, why would you say, "If you don't get mail at the registered address then you'll want to be sure you sign up to receive it online."

Oh no, I'm sorry for any confusion I caused @pburn. It defaults to 'Online & mail', and would need to be changed to 'Online only'. If you go here you'll see that is says, "If eligible, you'll automatically receive a Form 1099-K in the mail. Alternatively, you can choose to download a copy in Seller Hub and My eBay."

I was suggesting switching to 'Online only' because it sounded like some sellers were saying they don't want/can't get mail sent to their registered address.

Re: Sales Reported to IRS

Lots and lots of threads about the $600.00 1099K .

2 important dates coming up.

11/8/2022

11/5/2024

Doing anything other than taking full advantage of the above dates is a total waste of time.

Thanks, velvet@ebay. That's the same link I provided in my Message #42.

The whole crux of my tag to you was whether the verbiage about the delivery of Form 1099-K to qualifying sellers was correct on the eBay help page you and I have both cited or whether the verbiage was correct on the Seller Hub page. The two pages contradict each other in regard to how Form 1099-Ks will be delivered to sellers.

The eBay help page says they'll be mailed to each qualified seller and, alternatively, can be downloaded:

"If eligible, you'll automatically receive a Form 1099-K in the mail. Alternatively, you can choose to download a copy in Seller Hub and My eBay."

The Seller Hub page says the opposite:

"We’ll provide your 1099-K through Seller HubMy eBay or you can ask to have it sent to you by regular mail. We’ll make sure we notify you when you’ve reached the $600 threshold."

That's what we're trying to get a definitive answer on from you, and I think you've confirmed that the eBay help page is correct, and the Seller Hub page is incorrect (and should be edited/amended). You've also provided @readabouthorses with the information s/he was interested in regarding not received mail at his/her eBay-registered address.

Thanks so much!

Thanks velvet. Can you also try to have the contradictory statement on the following page fixed, if we don’t have to ask for a mailed copy:

https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/service-and-payments/2022-changes-to-ebay-and-your-1099-k.html#...

“We’ll provide your 1099-K through Seller Hub, My eBay or you can ask to have it sent to you by regular mail. We’ll make sure we notify you when you’ve reached the $600 threshold.“

Oh my @pburn and @dq3141! I seem to have missed that bit. Thanks for pointing it out. I just thought the discrepancy between pages was regarding the wording between 'total sales' and 'gross payment amount received'. I understand though, and I'll put in a request to have the Seller Center verbiage updated there as well. Thank you!

How can this be fixed? Is Ebay working on this?  They will be losing a lot of sellers over this.

eBay tried to get the government to not pass it however it was to no avail. So it's done. Millions of small sellers will be leaving due to this trigger change for a variety of reasons. They were buyers too. So who wins?

Only the IRS coffers.

Who wins, those of us that have been claiming our income like we are supposed to be doing.

Have a great day.

At the risk of offending whoever composes edits to the help pages, this has to be one of the most poorly constructed sentences I've ever read on a "professional" website. I can't even figure out what it means:

"You can also opt to only receive a downloadable copy in Seller Hub and My eBay instead or receiving a copy by mail."

  • The word "only" is misplaced. As it stands, it's modifying the word "receive." It should read, "You can also opt to received only a downloadable copy . . . "
  • I believe the word "or" should be "of" in the phrase "instead or receiving."

That sentence really needs to be cleaned up ASAP, since right now is the time sellers would be accessing that information.

Also, this page still seems to have the contradictory verbiage:

https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/service-and-payments/2022-changes-to-ebay-and-your-1099-k.html#...

Hey @pburn! Thanks for the additional note about the help page suggested edits. I've passed that on. We're still working on getting the Seller Center updated. Hopefully that will happen soon.
