I think your post is unnecessarily cruel.

The OP needs an education, not abuse.

I think the OP's post is a bit tongue in cheek.

When it comes to selling, it isn't the OP's 1st rodeo.

Well, I haven't sold any collectible coins in a while, so I am not up to speed on FVF fees for old coins but - - - - -
These numbers do not make any sense to me.  Did you leave something out?

Because, by my math, if eBay "took" $84.40 from a $600.00 sale, that would leave you with $515.60.

Five hundred fifteen dollars and sixty cents.

Did you make a typo?

Not a typo.

Cost of item was $500.00 to the seller.

Listed and sold for  $600.00  with $4.00 shipping: may not have had tax.

So $84.40 was what the final value fees.

So 604.00 minus 500 is 104.00. say 4 for shipping so 100.00

Now subtract total fees charged and it is  $15.60 profit so far made on the sale of item,

This of course does not include the cost of shipping supplies and cost of store or any other normal costs.

It other words a profit was made of 15.60 so far,

for an investment of 588.40 bucks with out any other costs (which there are).

This example the Op posted is a very typical profit per item statement to the seller, and not just eBay end amounts..

Was a nice coin they sold by the way.

Some sellers will do a break even, or small loss with such items to aid in sales of other goods. This may or may not be the case with the OP.

Re: SELLING FEES

This is why its a good idea to factor in all associated costs of selling something before ever investing a red cent in anything. You then need to mark up the price to include any desired profit before hand, otherwise this is what happens.

The shipping costs are ridiculous, as are ebays fees. Its the whole reason I primarily sell items that are cheap to ship, like movies, books, etc. They are much easier items to turn a profit with, vs. bulkier items that require priority mail.

Very good point and I thank you for reminding me that my experiences are not the same as others' experiences.

A little over two years ago, I inherited maybe a couple dozen collectible dollar coins and several US Proof Sets after the death of a relative.  I sold them on eBay.  I am sure that was part of his intent, that whoever inherited them would be able to use them to pay bills or whatever.  They paid most of my property taxes last November.

I guess, for most of my own personal property that I have sold, I had owned it so long that I wasn't worried about a Total Net Loss.   As one example, about ten years ago now, I purchased a Thing for around $60.00.  I realized I would never use it.  I listed it a few times before marking it down, in 2020, to $25.99, and I netted $21.76.  I am sure there are people who might say I cheated myself but -- I knew I would never use it.  It would just sit here and collect dust and probably be thrown into a dumpster when I eventually leave this earth.  It didn't sell at a price that was closer to what I originally paid.  So I took what I could get.

But another similar Thing -- without being specific -- I bought at around $14.00.  Eventually I knew I would never use it, after I had purchased other items that would be needed in order to actually use it.  I had learned that that particular item had soared in price due to its discontinuance by the manufacturer.   I sold it for around $100.00.  That one helped me pay my vehicle registration.

To me, this is one of the good things about eBay.  As long as we accept the rules and regulations, it can work for almost any seller.

@Anonymous

You have been selling for awhile now.  I'm surprised that you were unaware of what your selling fees would be for any item you sell on the site.  That is such an important piece of information to have so you can properly price your items.  IDK why you thought you could sell it for $100 more than you paid for it and everything would turn out OK for you.

I strongly suggest you spend a little time on the below link and make sure you understand the pricing so you can better prepare yourself for the future.  I do hope your future hold better news for you.

Re: SELLING FEES

That is what  happens when  you  use auctions.  You  received one bid for your item at your starting price.  If  this item was worth more you could  have set your starting bid at a price that would have  produced a higher  profit margin or at a fixed price that would make your girlfriend  happier.  But  she was  spot on.

If the market  price  was $600 you simply paid too much for it.

Better luck next time - maybe your  need to review your  profits on the all of your current  active 159 assuming you will get only 1 bid but first read this - and know what you paid for each item.

Re: SELLING FEES

Yeah, unfortunately buying something for 20% lower than the price you sell it is not a good investment knowing the cost to sell it is 15%. At least you made a profit. Typically to actually make money you need to buy at 50% less then the selling cost.
