SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

Good morning, and happy new month to all you scroungers and sloungers.

The scrounge lounge originated in 2003, catering to all of us who obtain our merchandise for selling at various places such as thrift stores, yard sales, rummage sales, even dumpster diving and picking up items someone has set out along the street for garbage pickup.

Does this sound like you?  Come on in, put your feet up and set a spell.

You're a good buyer, Sunfarmer! Sounds like some great deals!

Laurie, I don't even know one ebay seller in town... I know a couple dealers but don't know if they sell anything online. You'd think! I Haven't sold at GR for years so I'm clueless who's doing what.
There is a new little shop in an old house on main street. They have a new and old inventory, I hate that (tons of those cute "Signs" that look primitive, that rage was over about 7 years ago IMO. Home canned goods, everything you can think of, have only been in there once. They are open ONE WEEKEND PER MONTH (and I doubt they'll even do that in the winter).
Uh, Good Luck With That! You can't make any money in this town at that rate.

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

Great scrounging, Sun!  I bought a pair of pictures quite a few years ago, nice hand carved frames on them.  I listed them separately and I was offered twice what my opening bid was on each if I would end the auctions and sell to him, he said because he "liked the frames".  Hmmm.  Sounded a bit misleading so I did some research and found the pictures themselves were limited editions from the 1920s of a famous artist so I did some fast revisions of those auctions.  Oh, I did thank him for his offer.  grinning

That store is in the town you live in, M*M?  Or in Rochester?  Yeah, one weekend per month is guaranteed to be a money loser!

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

Hey All!

Keeping up with most of the US, we have been in the low 90s with thunderstorms and humidity.  Really, not too bad once you are used to it.

Scrouging was slim this weekend.  Lots of folks are away as school starts in most counties 7/31 to 8/3.  We never went back to school before Labor Day.  It was like a right of passage.  Traffic picks up with school - school buses, kids driving or being driven to private or charter schools.  Miss Elsie starts Pre-K this Fall.

In the ongoing Mayor trip saga, there is a columnist for the Atl Journal who has an ongoing 'love affair' with the mayor who he calls Hizzoner.  Here is his latest column, a little long but well worth the read if you need a chuckle today.  BTW, one of Hizzoner's court that went was scheduled to retire the day after they returned.  Nice going away party!  Anyway enjoy:

Good scrounging Sun.  M*M and Laurie, you are not alone!

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

He's baaaaaaaccck!

Had a great, if brief trip.

Drove from Maysville to Louisville Wednesday to collect daughter after her big test (results pending). Left Louisville at 2:45 and arrived in St. Augustine at 4:15 Thursday morning. Beach, pool and seafood for three solid days; nice visiting my parents (my dad is fljwl on eBay). Pretty much stuck to seafood, but we couldn't resist a bbq place in Crescent Beach called Vegetarian Recovery Center. Parents are in their 80s but still walking and talking and doing pretty well. Left St. A at 6:15 yesterday morning, in Louisville 13 hours later. Got back home last night at 10:15. Lots of driving but fortunately I like driving. Our 4 inside cats and 3 outside cats were just fine; one slept on my lap last night. Got the dogs from the "pet resort" this morning.

Interestingly enough, our little hometown of Maysville made the national news with its weather early yesterday morning. A quick 6" of rain resulted in flash flooding. One car lot had 20 vehicles "let loose" and wander into the main highway in town. One man is missing. Maysville is on the Ohio River and had the foresight to build a floodwall shortly after the 1937 food, but that only protects us from the Ohio, not the local creeks.

Wish my daughter luck on her test results!

And for those keeping track, that's the 1937 flood - not the 1937 food.

Welcome back, Kyal!  Sounds like a nice vacation, even though short.  Bummer on the flood!  I'm crossing fingers for your daughter to have nice high scores on her tests, but I'm betting she will have passed with high flying colors.

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

I looked at your father's listings/sales.  Looks like he's had better sales than most sellers in July.

Was the missing man from the flood found yet?  I hope none of the vehicles that slid into the main highway didn't cause any accidents?

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

Hi Scroungers!  LTNS.  I can't believe I've missed posting in June and now July is almost over with, too.  Kind of been hard to switch between ebay accounts as I've been mostly on my seller account.

Maybe I should've written a few things down whenever I've peeked in here for a few minutes here and there.  I seem to be getting more CRS lately as sometimes I can't remember what I just did 5 min. ago.  Anyway, I'll attempt to summarize, but apologies in advance for not remembering some goings on with some of you.

Ahh, just remembered a post by Laurie that I couldn't make sense of, then was glad that she came back and posted about a few posts, incl her response had been removed.  I think we have a pink, or should I say Blue, on our side (based on a mod going to the trouble of correcting the date to the correct, current month Kyal's opening post a couple of months ago).

Sun, so glad that you've sold a lot in your booths and have gotten a lot of stuff at auctions.

Yme, not sure whether you're sad or glad to have broken your resolve to not scrounge, but glad that you found something small that should bring a nice ROI.  Okay if I post an eBay question to you on the thread sometimes?  Not a newbie, but had such a long gap, so it's been/still is a bit of a learning curve for both dh & I.  And, of course, I can't think of any question at the moment.

Kyal, congrats on the 2 "doctors" in your family.  I love reading about your finds and success with selling them here and elsewhere.  You have a good eye, some good luck, and perhaps some divine provenance or something like that.  Hope you have great success with the 2 sets of books you recently purchased.

Kay, sounds like you have done similar to Yme with keeping yourself from buying.  Going to gs to just look is a good pastime, but would be hard for me.

Patd, there's so much political corruption going on everywhere in the U.S. Not just the big cities, either as our t.v. news sometimes reports scandals in some really small towns. One reason I hate politics.

Pat, hard to believe that your oldest g.s. is driving now.  They sure grow up fast.

Justy, it's great that you hosted such a big family dinner; sounded wonderful.  We're pretty much in the same boat as what Kay said about the family name probably dying out and not by choice.

M*M, I can understand why you quit the C.G. job.  If you were staying, I was going to suggest taking a folding chair and sitting outside when weather permitted. It might have saved you from pulling a muscle like you mentioned, though you'd still have had to get up and down from a sitting position.

I'm glad that you got treatment for your Vertigo.  Years ago, in my twenties, when I had it so bad, I had some testing done at the ear specialist's office.  In doing one of the tests, it involved an assistant moving my head all around (while I was laying down).  It made me very dizzy, but also seemed to have taken care of most of the dizziness.  I still get dizzy sometimes, but it's less severe than I had in my twenties.

Shoppers, I hope that you, your dh, and Murphy are doing okay.  Please let us know.

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

Earlier this month, I had cataract surgery in my right eye.  Everything went well, piece of cake, including be able to see (though not quite right) the same day as the surgery.  My sight completely came back the day after surgery.  Have had a few restrictions as my eyes have had to get used to working together again after only have vision in one eye (or the other) for nearly 8 months.  Still not completely working together as the vision is so different, one from the other.  Hopefully getting glasses will help that.  I go back this week to get my vision tested for glasses.  Need them more for the left eye than for the right.  A close relative had retina problems recently and got treatment right away when they recognized the symptoms as similar to what I've had in the past.

So, we've been selling, or trying to sell, a bunch of books, "media", and other stuff on ebay.  Quite the learning curve since haven't done all that much or regularly for about 10 yrs, also due to selling mostly different kinds of books here than we did in the past.  We've made a bunch of mistakes with pricing too low or too high, with using auctions, and with using best offer.

Currently have an ongoing love/hate thing with best offer.  Sometimes great for stuff with lots of flaws and/or too many printings, bad for other times when realizing the buyer probably would've paid full price without it.  Some really lowball offers to an already too low of a price caused me to end some listings. Not a great thing to do and have probably lost a few buyer's confidence in us, but it is what it is.  Been finding that other sellers buy when something's too low, like in the 20's or less, then seeing them list it here or elsewhere for about 5x as much.  We're torn between needing the money quick, like the fast nickel rather than the slow dime, but not wanting to get a supersonic "penny" so another seller can try to quadruple or quintuple their ROI.  Also not sure why some of these sellers buy with their seller id's.

We noticed that sales got better once we got the magic ten feedbacks with the DSR's showing.  Of course, not everyone leaves feedback, but it does make us wish for the same feedback percentages on the big river.

Speaking of which, selling, or the ability to sell certain things over there keeps getting worse.  Still hanging in there and getting some sales even though the bottom basically fell out there.

Speaking of wedding anniversaries, we are celebrating 38 years this week.  Congrats to all of you other "long timers", especially Patd.

The current Reader's Digest issue for July has an article about expressions and words around the U.S.  It even mentions You'se.  That's not said here, though one of my good friends once gave me a funny b-day card in my teens.  The design on the front was sorta of a hobo or bum and the first line said, "I like you'se because you'se have class."  Not sure if I still have the card; if I do, it's probably buried in my bedroom closet in a box.  I grew up with y'all or ya'll, though I see most people write it as ya'll.  "Fixin" as in "I'm fixing to go to the store" (etc) is another word and one that dh (a northerner or Yankee as my Mother said) has never gotten used to using, though is now used to hearing it.

Well,  that's the end of my novella for now. 😉

Re: SCROUNGE LOUNGE $$$$$ jULY 2017

Oh, okay, M*M Jill  - so having anything in that place two blocks from your house wouldn't bring you in any more sales than what you'd have by having your own garage sale at Gold Rush time?
