SCAM

I posted an item for $50.  I got an offer for $100.  Sounds good.  I accepted.  Then I got an email stating that they were in the Marines and wanted the item sent to their son, and while I was at it, could I buy a $300.  Apple gift card and put it in the package for his birthday gift.  They would add the $300 to the ebay payment and an extra $50. for shipping.  Well, that's were the good offer ended.  I told them I could not buy the gift card.   I don't expect any payment from them, I did send an invoice but am sure I will not hear back.    I googled this and learned this is a scam that has been around for a while.  I had no idea.  So, if it sounds like a good deal, just beware.  Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Re: SCAM

That whole scenario is just so BLATANT, I'm not sure how the perpetrator thought it would fly.

However, I've enjoyed the specter of reading many times on the boards of just such a scam put forth and sellers jumped right on it and come back wondering how they will EVER get their money back.

Luckily, most people realise in time to pull back, but those who don't - what are they thinking?

Re: SCAM

I got the email from ebay on 11/14 that it was sold.  I sent an invoice on 11/15.   So, I should wait until 11/18 or should it be 11/19 to cancel the order?

Re: SCAM

Thank you for posting this very good reminder - often new or low volume sellers are a target of these awful people.

@elagr4044

eBay sends a payment reminder, so there's no need to invoice. Yes... the invoice you generated reset the clock for the deadbeat. And it will reset with every invoice sent. So, there's no need to invoice. Live and learn!

Re: SCAM

Mr. Rockstar.   I am not blinded by greed.   The item I was selling was listed at 50% of its actual value.   I was just hoping to get a fair price.

If you sent an invoice on 11/15, add 4 days from the last contact you had with the scam buyer (the invoice), and that would be the 19th. Then the 20th (the 5th day) is the earliest you can cancel the order with "Buyer Did Not Pay". Your option to use "Buyer Did Not Pay" dos not appear until after the 4th day ends.

Don't send any more invoices or make ANY contact with the buyer, as the clock to cancel with the above reason resets each time a contact with the buyer is made.

Cheers, Duffy

Re: SCAM

There was no harm in trying. Its a free country, and if the offer was legit, you would've made out pretty well.

I'm pretty sure you'll be ok here, and I'm glad you are not " all the way" on it.

Re: SCAM

Thanks - When I was reading the ebay  instructions, it sounded to me, that it was mandatory that I send an invoice.    I appreciate everyones help.  Am just learning.   I will be on this Nov 20th for sure.

You can file an unpaid case to get a refund of the selling fees.

There is no such thing as an unpaid item case any more, its just a matter of cancelling the sale after 96 hours. It can be done manually on a case by case basis or set up to do so automatically.
