Returning different item for refund

How could anyone make a purchase and place a different item in the package to get a refund on that return? Just had that happen for the first time in 20 years of selling on ebay. I guess it was bound to happen. The minute I received the item today, I could tell without out even opening it that something was not right. The weight of the item was off. They were sold a  boys sz 18 pair of heavy blue jean shorts and  retuned a womens sz 2 camoflague spandex blend shorts. Reported the situation to ebay and had them step in. Within an hour I was told the case was closed in my favor......Thank goodness & AMEN!

You got lucky, usually when a seller asks eBay to step in the opposite happens.

We reviewed this case and have closed it without any refund to the buyer. The case will not affect your seller performance. Any feedback left for this transaction will be removed.

Buyer confusion rather than outright scamming. There are many more lucrative ways to defraud someone.

What did the buyer say when you contacted them about the mistake? This was a regular return?

I wish I had a dollar for every comment here advising someone in your position to just suck it up because eBay won't do anything about it.

Yes indeed you got very lucky.  Ebay doesn't usually do that.  It is actually very surprising as Ebay usually won't help the seller on something like this.  So congratulations.

Now please make sure you report the buyer for abuse of the return system.  It only takes a moment and it is an important step so it is on the record.

 The same way sellers often mistakenly send the wrong item to buyers. It happens all the time.

Dishonest consumers do that a lot online and it is always a it of a risk. Most people have some kind of conscience and wont do something like that or have the fear of God in them to prevent them from doing a total Mail Fraud in sending back the wrong merchandise. You got lucky with the case ending in your favor. It means Ebay IS stepping up to the plate and taking “care” of these atrocious buyers.

As far as I know this sort of behavior is unique to homo sapiens. 

Although I suspect its possible that crows and dolphins might be able to do it.

Were it only sad.   Social media have eroded the boundaries -- right versus wrong, good versus evil, truth versus fiction, etc. -- which those of us of a certain age were taught as small children.   

To see the results, all one need to do is look at the newspaper.

It's not coincidental that the US surgeon general has requested a warning label for social media.  regards

The buyer never contacted me for the return. I just have it set automatically. The returned as "too big".  What was sent back wa a womens sz 2..."too big"? Since I was not contacted by the buyer, I never contacted them, I went right to ebay and requested ebay step in.
