Returned item gets returned to sender

A buyer who filed a return request says their item with the ebay generated return postage label said USPS didn't accept the package and sent it back to them. They are asking me for another postage label.

The buyer didn't say why it got returned to them. What do I do now?

Ask them to snap a photo of package, and a close up of the label and any USPS markings on the refused package and pass them along to you. Reason being so that you can investigate the issue before sending them another label. Proceed from there.

Déjà Moo: The strange feeling that I've heard this bull before...

The first thing I would do is ask the buyer why USPS didn't accept the package, and go from there.

Some post offices don't understand that although the Return Label says first class, it's not a violation of USPS policy to return it in the original packaging, even if that packaging says Priority.   As a result, some post offices reject it.   Was your original packaging Priority packaging?

Really? I never knew this. I get many returns back with First Class labels using Priority Mail packaging (sometimes they are the original, other times they are brand new Priority Mail packaging.) Where did you find this out... can you show me a link? And yes, this particular original packaging was Priority Mail.

@adkhighkerYup... just waiting on the buyer's reply. If they even do.

@myjunqueyourtreasureYea I can do that too. But I get really lazy on Mondays. I'm also afraid of the wait time on Mondays. This day is always the busiest because of the weekend, and it'll throw me off if I opt for the "call me" button and they catch me in the middle of something when they call back.

Fwiw, a year or so ago I had a similar situation with an outbound package. Address checked out ok, bar code details ok, but the package kept getting returned by the origin sort center.  With the local USPS manager tried crossing out the bar code to force a manual sort at the DC and a few other tricks - finally after 4x the package finally got past the origin sort center and then was delivered with no other issues. So strange things do happen.

Yea so the buyer replied back to me, saying they had to pay $7.25 to ship it back to me Priority Mail. I think this is a case of the buyer getting confused/overwhelmed at whatever the dumb USPS counter clerk told them.

As @threshold.sales.group pointed out, a lot of USPS employees don't really know the policies and just do what they feel... oftentimes giving wrong info to innocent customers who get mislead then overwhelmed. I can't count how many times I called out counter clerks for their blunders and bluffs.

So the buyer said they dropped it off at the counter and the clerk said the postage was missing something (like another prinout). This isn't an international package so there is no additional printout... like a customs form. The buyer was unable to bring up the label again in ebay to reprint, they weren't able to check if what they had was in fact incomplete. So they basically just took the hit and paid the $7.25 to send it back to me. My guess is that if the buyer did print out the label and stuck it on the package.... they should have just bypassed the counter clerks and just dropped it off in the back docks.

But then again, I can't expect oblivious buyers to know this. I'm going to contact my concierge to see if they can reach out to the buyer and explain this process to them... or at least show them how to use ebay's returns system and maybe take responsibility if the buyer was unable to get a "complete" label from them.

One time I tried returning something in the original priority small flat rate box it was sent in- the label was return service priority. The clerk declined it because the label didn't specify small flat rate box. Very clueless clerk and I didn't have time to argue or ask for a manager. I took it home and put it with packages for carrier pickup the next day- got to its location with no problem.
