Back on 9-14-21 i sold a reel to reel for $900.00 and the buyer stated the item was not as described but wouldnt send pics after being repeatedly asked so i offered a partial refund and they agreed to a partial refund of $170.00, i agreed and paid them $170.00. my auction states 30 day return policy. today 12-31-21 i get an ebay message stating the buy wants all of the money back. to reach anyone by phone on ebay is hard to do so i am hoping someone here can give me some advice. ebay has all the messages we discussed back and forth. after all this time and giving the partial refund will they make me pay it all back? I did what was asked. this reel to reel was fully tested for functionality and all flaws were mentioned. the rca jack in the back that supposedly was broken/worn was Not broken or worn when packaged in fully surrounded 6 inches of styrofoam insulation and boxed in the heaviest cardboard box i could buy at Pakmail. I feel scammed.

Your eBay dealings have been satisfied. But you still might have to deal with your buyer in the case of a PayPal or credit card claim. I'd be feeling scammed if I were you, too.

Unfortunately, any buyer can steal any item from any seller at any time by filing a fraudulent dispute with either eBay or his payment source.

Dear Buyer.....
I am sorry you are not happy with your purchase. Unfortunately, you have waited beyond my 30 day return policy which is clearly stated in my auction. (as long as you did state it... as I have not checked). Therefore, I can not refund any more money. Thank you for understanding.
Sincerely,
Seller

Guess that buyer wasn't aware that he could open an item not as described case and you would have been required to send him a prepaid return shipping label as well as refund in full when you received the item back.
He would not have been required to submit pictures. He would have had 30 days after receipt to do this with eBay.
If he had allowed that deadline to expire, he would have had 180 days to file with Paypal.
Or he could have done a charge back via his credit card.
Just wanted to remind you of how the MBG works.

@mj455 This platform offers 30 days to return an item, this is over three months so something isn't kosher here. The message may not be legitimate. I suggest you reach out to eBay using social media as phone support no longer exists. Go to eBay for business on Facebook and hit send a message. Type in exactly what you wrote above and someone will get back to you shortly. Stop messaging with the buyer at this point and wait for an answer from a rep.

eBay allows buyers to open cases after the 30-day deadline ... but the buyer cannot ask eBay to 'step in' if the seller is unwilling to work with them. There's no reason for the OP to contact eBay, as they are at no risk of losing the eBay case. [However, the buyer can still open a PayPal case or request a chargeback from their credit/debit card company.]

@house*of*paws That is up to the seller but they can still contact eBay if they wish, no reason to stop them from doing so.

Of course they can contact eBay if they wish ... but why should they when it's totally unnecessary? [The issue of a buyer opening a case after the 30-day deadline has been addressed many times before on the Boards. It is neither new nor non-kosher.] 🙂

I forgot to add that ebay stated this; 1785 has filed a payment dispute outside of eBay about an order that was placed on Oct 07, 2021. This means the buyer has disputed a charge directly with their payment provider. They are requesting $725.00 back and the reason for this dispute is that the item doesn't match the description in your listing.

HI! I know once a deal is agreed upon between the buyer & seller E-bay is out of it then. So your $170.00 agreement would stand.

That is a chargeback being done by the buyers credit card company. Ebay is out of it at this time except to pass on that information and usually give you 1 shot at replying with 1 attachment.
When a buyer opens a 'doesn't match description' the credit card company wants to see what you sent them. You will reply with 1 picture of that same RtoR from the listing.
Then, you'll wait.

Hi @mj455
Now I'm not sure that I understand your situation. You said you sold the item on 9/14/21 ... but now you're saying eBay told you the buyer placed the order on 10/7/21. Are you talking about the same sale?
If the buyer merely filed a case with eBay ... you aren't required to do anything. The buyer will not be able to escalate the case ... so there is no way you can lose.
BUT if the buyer filed a case with their 'payment provider' ... like their credit card company ... you likely will lose the case. That means that the rest of the buyer's payment will be taken from your payment source ... AND you'll be charged an extra fee ($25 I think) by the CC company for their efforts. The buyer will NOT be told to return the item.
eBay will NOT stop the buyer's CC company from taking your money.
I think you should post your question again with the new information you just provided ... so that you can get more opinions on what to do. Forget about how carefully you packed, etc. That won't matter to the buyer's CC company.
IF you are certain that the buyer filed a case with their 'payment source' ... then I think you should consider contacting the buyer AND offer to provide the money to return the item for a refund. That way you will still have the item to sell again. Otherwise, you're likely to be out both the item and all the money the buyer paid you.
I'm sorry I don't have better news for you. From what I understand, if you were under 'Managed Payments' when you sold the item ... then eBay cannot protect you from a chargeback. It's out of their hands. 😒

@house*of*paws I have always enjoyed your responses on this forum in the past. I have actually looked forward to your replies prior to this. I don't understand why you keep posting antagonistic replies directed solely to me and you keep tagging me to make sure I see your replies. I am entitled to my opinion just as you are. I am asking you now kindly to stop directing replies to me and concentrate on the OP only. You are making me very uncomfortable. Thank you.
