I sold a book to someone that asked it be sent to someone else. They did not tell me I was sending this book to someone incarcerated in prison. No details as to their prison number or the prison they were in. The prison sent the book back to me and the buyer stated the item wasn’t as expected. I asked the buyer, because they had some unspoken concern if a written receipt was acceptable. They stated it was. I would be happy to send the book the the buyer but do not want to refund due to their error. Please advise as I cannot find a way to a solution searching eBay guidelines. Thank you!

Start over -- refund the buyer all except the shipping cost, citing problem with buyer's address.
When you mailed the book, was there nothing at all in the address that would have clued you in as to the recipient's location? What "written receipt" ?

never send to any addy that eBay did not supply.
You are not covered due to you shipped it some were else.
Item was not received at the correct address attached to eBay you owe a refund.
Be glad you got the item back in this case.

"Be glad you got the item back in this case."
Be glad you didn't get a cake back with something hidden inside. 🗡
