Return Never Sent Back?

Long story short I had a buyer request a return a few weeks after making a purchase. I offered free returns and accepted the return, paid for the label sent it and am waiting on the buyer to return the item. Well it's past the date they had to send it back (by nearly a week) and tracking still hasn't been updated and status hasn't been shipped. Is there any way I can close the case or will Ebay do that automatically?

Ebay will not close the case for 30 days. If you want your money sooner you have to contact ebay and ask that the case be closed. Ebay will also extend the deadline for buyers these days with no clear rules on doing so.

Anymore, the seller has about 'Forever + 1 Day' to return.

I'd not escalate it to eBay yet... simply because they don't want to hear from you. Give it the 30 days. Good luck!

eBay has very clear timelines for automatically closing an abandoned return.

How much time are buyers given to ship returned items?
When buyers are sent an eBay-generated return label, the return is closed if the label is not printed within 10 business days. If the buyer prints the label, we allow the return to remain open an additional* 5 business days to ensure shipping scans are captured.

Changes to handling return requests that appear abandoned
Starting April 1, 2020, we will no longer close returns early at the request of a seller when the buyer has not shipped the item back.
