Relisting an item after it's too late to cancel original transaction

I have a somewhat unique situation in which my auction's winning bidder asked me to defer requesting payment for a month because they are out of the country.  Well, fast forward a month, and they still haven't paid despite multiple reminders.  At this point, eBay won't let me cancel the transaction, or even open an Unpaid Item Case against the buyer because it's been past 32 days.  I have reported the buyer, but meanwhile how do I get the transaction fees back that eBay charged me?  Only then will I be satisfied re-listing the item.

Relisting an item after it's too late to cancel original transaction

Hi @venusspaceprobe

I just wanted to confirm that eBay no longer charges sellers Final Value fees until after the buyer pays.  [The fees currently are withheld from the buyer’s payment before the funds are transferred to the seller’s account.]

If the transaction goes 30 days without payment, it simply ‘times out’ … without any penalty to either the buyer or the seller.  The seller can then relist the item (if they wish) … without concern of having 2 buyers paying for the same item.

Prior to Managed Payments, eBay took their fees as soon as the item ‘sold’ … regardless of whether the buyer paid … so sellers would forfeit their fees if they neglect to cancel the unpaid for transaction within 30 days.

In short, you can relist the item in question whenever you wish.  No FV fees have been taken … and the original buyer is no longer able to pay for the item.  [I would recommend you block the buyer so that they aren’t able to purchase the item again and waste more of your time.]

You should have never agreed to deferring payment that long, never.  You may have to reach out to Ebay for Business on Facebook to appeal.   And not getting your transaction fees back would be an inexpensive lesson learned.

If the buyer never paid, how exactly did you incur any transaction fees?

Final Value Fees and Transaction Fees are not charged until payment is made.

If the buyer never paid, there is no FVF associated with the sale.

If you paid an insertion fee or a listing upgrade fee (an Auction Reserve for example) those fees are non-refundable

The (non) buyer never paid so there were no transaction fees incurred. Add the buyer to you buddy list and relist your item.

In the future don't ever agree to wait for payment. They never should have bid if they didn't intend to pay promptly and ones who ask you to "hold off", generally never pay.

Are you referring to the final value fees? There was no sale so you will not be charged the FVF.

The transaction fee of 30 cents is non-refundable.

Just cancel due to buyer never paid and you can relist for free.

Be sure to add them to your block list.

The whole point of the thread is that it has been 32 days since the transaction, so it's too late to do that.

What are your settings for payment?

It's odd ebay hasn't already auto cancelled it for non payment

I would imagine that a FVF would be imposed on an auction with or without payment if the seller does not file a non-payment within a certain amount of time in the same way that cancelling an auction will impose a FVF fee.

@m60driver

That is what used to happen before Managed Payments.  The fees were charged at "sale" whether or not payment was made because eBay could not determine with full accuracy whether or not something was paid.

Now that eBay handles the whole sale, including payment, the fees are not charged unless payment is made.

Ending an auction early is something different.  eBay frowns on ending auctions that have bids so the fee assessment is a penalty for doing so.

The 30 cent transaction fee IS refundable, has been for a couple of years.

What Jimmy said - And once again ... the fee is not even charged until payment 😉

If Managed Payments does not process a payment, there is no transaction fee (the 0.30) for doing so.

Fees are refundable when refunding a buyer - except when:

1) Seller cancels for Out of Stock

2) An INR case is opened and closed in the buyer's favor

3) A Return for any INAD reason

4) A Payment Dispute is opened

Also, the $0.30 is not refunded when voluntarily giving a buyer a partial refund (outside of a dispute)

Why would there be such a rule? Buyer never paid per the O.P. It's just nonsense.

per the O.P. post:  eBay won't let me cancel the transaction, or even open an Unpaid Item Case against the buyer because it's been past 32 days.

I also find it interesting that eBay will normally remind / pound a buyer to pay for a purchase so that they can get their fees.
