I haven't had a transaction in a relatively long time. An item I had listed for a long time sold. Ebay is holding my funds after the buyer paid due to my inactivity. I decided to cancel the transaction due to "out of stock or damage" and issue a refund. Ebay site asks me where should the refund come from and the two options are from my bank or one of my cards. Why can't the refund come from the funds being held by ebay?

It doesnt work that way. The refund will come from your payment source, and the sales funds will be released to you after a hold. Can take up to thirty days. Just be aware that you received a major defect to your account with that oos option. Your selling days may be finished here after that.

Why would you do that? You can end your current listings anytime before a sale occurs, but cancelling after the fact will not end well. Were you unable to find the item you sold?

You need to view it as 2 separate transactions independent of each other.
The refund is done in "real-time", and must be credited as such...
The payment you received is still "In Processing" and is not available until it is released. The original buyer should not have to wait for a refund based on the status of the processing, it needs to be immediate.
I would also try to find a way to fill that order. You will get dinged pretty good. Why would you list something you do not have?

Arbitrary choices for reasons to cancel are not good. Oh well, it's not like I really need a perfect status. Nearly a year ago I sold an item to what I deemed a thief. In the description I said that the item is missing a part but did not call it by name. The buyer got a real good price and then gave me my first negative fb before contacting me and he named the part missing. Ebay pretty much ordered me to give a refund. I did but kept the shipping cost.
The item in question now was listed the same time as the one the "thief" bought and I thought that I should really relist "AS-IS, NON WORKING, NO REFUNDS" to protect myself. I understand that I should have done it already but I'm old and getting forgetful.
Oh well, this may be my last transaction....

It's just not worth it anymore
