I sold a taillight May 17th, shipped it and was delivered May 20th. No feedback received, I did leave for buyer.
Today, Oct 28th, I got a "Refund request" for item not as described. Not return, just refund, says from a source outside of Ebay. Not sure if CC or Paypal, or what was used.
I see the options are refund, or challenge with proof that it was as described. I don't know what kind of "Proof" there would be, the only thing would possibly be the pics from the listing itself, which are long gone.
Not sure my best next step? It was a taillight I had on sale half price for $7.50, plus actual shipping of about $35, so I didn't make diddly on it anyway. If it was recent, I would prob just eat it all, since shipping is so much more than the item, but 5 months after getting it deciding it is wrong?
Thoughts/suggestions before I respond? Thanks!

@vikingsandpintos
For reference, it won't matter and they won't tell you. Claims made through PayPal or a credit card chargeback are both named PAYMENT DISPUTES now. The time frame is only limited to that of the payment provider and I think even AExpress allows a year. The same thing would have happened to you if the transaction had been last week instead of 5 months ago.
There is no seller protection for eBay claims or Payment Disputes for not as described issues. At least with an eBay claim, you can require the item (or at least something) be returned even if it is on your dime. With a payment dispute, a return is not required in order for a refund to be made from your proceeds.
The stupid jpg to offer in one's defense in these instances is basically criminal. The "defense" procedure is basically just for "looks". Your fate as a seller is determined when the claim is filed.
Yes, the less than honest have found the chargeback procedure preferable to an eBay claim.

PayPal allows 180 days
Bank DEBIT CARDS allow 6 months

So glad I don't sell here anymore. I miss it but when I read a story like this...no more dread for me. OP, sorry this happened to you.

I decided to challenge it. I clicked on "Challenge and add proof".
Wondering @vikingsandpintos
1. When did you challenge it, on Oct 28 perhaps?
@vikingsandpintos wrote:I clicked "Accept", and got a screen saying sometimes the buyer may be able to return the item. Nothing said about me being charged for shipping, so I did that.
2. Did you also get an option to enter a (different) address for the not-required-for-a-refund return?
@vikingsandpintos wrote:I tried bringing up the listing, long gone from Ebay.
Today I got a message that the refund request is complete, Ebay will take the money from me. No mention of requiring the "Buyer" to return the part.
BTW, the buyer never responded to my question about what the issue was in the first place. So, he got the part for free, 5 months later, because I couldn't really do anything about it.
3. How were you able to send the buyer a message, maybe from the listing -- wasn't it long gone?
Sounds about right: Oct 28 to Nov 3 is 6 days. From what we've read, payment disputes have a 5-day deadline.

PayPal has always allowed 180 days from date of purchase to file an 'item not as described' case. The buyer appears to be within the time limit for filing a dispute for an item purchased on 5/17/21 ... and there is no way for you to fight the case if the buyer is claiming the item malfunctioned.
I'm sorry this happened ... but you probably should just refund in full and move on. Be glad that not much money is involved. Good luck!

Well, they can ask, I see no problem with that.
On that note...
Can you send me $100?
Please?

I tried to challenge it Nov 1st, as Nov 2nd was the deadline to respond. I was hoping the buyer would respond to my message before then, but he didn't.
I was able to click the buyers id to send him a message.
I was given an option for my return address to use, it had my home address listed, I changed it to my work address that I always use to send or receive packages.
