I'm trying to help out an on-line acquaintance who has sold a vintage bicycle for Local Pickup, and is trying to understand what comes next. I am not sure myself. The buyer has paid on-line and eBay has released the funds to the seller (he sees the money in his own checking account), so it's all good to go. The buyer is several states away, and has someone local phoning the seller already and asking to arrange the pickup.
How is proof of pickup handled nowadays? I have an idea that the buyer is supposed to show a 6-digit code at pickup time and the seller types that in someplace...? Or is the seller simply given the code already and waits to see if the person picking up the item can present the matching code? I am not the seller and cannot look over his shoulder, so I cannot give him more useful help right now. Thanks in advance for more details!

Okay, thanks. That seems to be written for the buyer's perspective rather than the seller's, but that's clear enough. I'll forward that link.
(Does the seller know the 6-digit code in advance? I assume not, since otherwise that would enable scam sellers to fake the proof of pickup, but if picking up the item at a different location such as the local police station parking lot, I assume the seller will need, at minimum, the eBay mobile app in order to validate the 6-digit code before handing over the merch, right?)

Because a third party is involved (the friend doing the pickup), the buyer should either send the 6-digit code or a screenshot of the QR code to the friend picking up. When the item is picked up, the seller needs the 6-digit code or the QR code to scan and that info gets entered through the app.

Proof of pickup
Proof of pickup is required to protect you against item not received cases.
For proof of pickup you can:
To scan the QR code:
If the buyer doesn't have the QR code available, ask them for the 6-digit code they received through email and manually enter it in the app.
While the help page does also say you can get a signed order form in lieu of using the app, we've seen sellers on this board lose INR claims when they used that method instead of entering info on the app. I would discourage the seller from choosing this option.
If you don't want to use the app, ask the buyer to sign a copy of the eBay order form at the time of pickup.

One additional note, make sure the seller is familiar with this part of the MBG which says the buyer loses coverage for non-receipt claims and not as described claims when having a third party execute the pick up:
Exclusions and special coverage when the buyer doesn't receive an item
NOT COVERED - Items collected by a third party on behalf of the buyer
Exclusions and special coverage when the item doesn't match the listing
NOT COVERED - The item was collected by a third party on behalf of the buyer
