Questions on "promoted listings"

I have see the promoted listings option for a long while, and decided to opt in some of my items... but I'm not sure what it does.

Is this the same as those sponsored listings I see when doing Ebay searches?  I'm assuming not, because when I search for MY stuff, I don't see it come up any differently, (Best Match, Highest First or other filters except Nearest First)

So:

What does Promoted Listings do for me? Except that Ebay takes a percentage?

Is this the same or different than Sponsored Items?

If 100 sellers opt into Promoted Listings, I still can get buried, right?

The listing you see as sponsored are the promoted listings. The advantages of this are that your items may appear more often in all the search categories like newly listed, best match, highest first etc. I have monitored some of mine and that is how they get seen. It can help with visibility and when they see that one they may click into your other listings.

Questions on "promoted listings"

The real key is that the sponsored items appear in places OTHER THAN search.......in the sidebars, the rows of "stuff" in listings (not your listings) etc.  You get "general" exposure .........I look at like the stuff at the checkout stand.......the candy is sold on a candy shelf, but it's also put where people who weren't looking for it might buy on impulse.........

I should also point out that not every promoted listing of a red x will appear as promoted in a search for red x.....  the search could well only show a few promoted and the rest of the listings are normal. i.e. you don't pay the extra.......

This is good to know about the paying extra as far as the promoted listings... so basically if I "promote" my listings,  the only way Ebay charges me the percentage is if the person buys the item based on if thy clicked on the "Sponsored Listing"...

As far as the stuff "on the side" that seems to be only desktop searches... I don't think the Ebay app does that...
