A customer asked for a return thru ebay and I sent the label thru eBay, how do you know the tracking number of the return?

It will post in the return details once the buyer has actually delivered it to the post office and they scan it.

If an eBay return request was accepted with eBay providing the return label, the tracking number should appear in the return request when the buyer uses the label.

Refunded???? Why would they now use a return label.
If they had not printed the label before the refund/closure, they will not be able to print the label.
If it is being used, if it is USPS, and you have informed delivery the # should appear there when shipped.

But I received an email from eBay stating item was shipped back, so I did refund in good faith, I don't want customers wait too long to get their money back. Customer states they dropped package at post office

Looks like you refunded them. no tracking because you must have chose refund... not sure you can do anything now.
Try contacting them and see if they got a label. If not I'm afraid you are too late unless you purchase a label outside of eBay and send it to them if they agree to ship it back

Did you agree to refund and send a label?
Or did you say return it for a refund and provided the label?
It looks like you refunded first if the buyer was refunded. In that case if you refunded they have no incentive to return it.

I said return for refund and provided the label at my cost, then eBay sends me a message the next day stating the item has shipped the item back, so I refunded in good faith, I don't want buyers to wait. but really buyers can also mark returns as shipped before doing so.

"... then eBay sends me a message the next day stating the item has shipped the item back, so I refunded in good faith..."
Oh, my. A seller is not required to refund the customer until the item has come back to the seller. You jumped the gun.
I hate it for you, but that's all I got.

Yep. Just like sellers' orders are marked as shipped when only a label is created. I hope your buyer sends it back to you.

You should have waited for the item to be returned to you before refunding. If the item returned has been used or damaged (or is not the same item), you may be able to deduct up to 50% of the refund amount.
If you refund before the buyer returns the item, the buyer can keep the item and the refund without consequence.

You know, I am not really worried or care about it, but I refunded in good faith when ebay said it was shipped, and not thinking that the buyer can do as the seller "Mark an item shipped ".
This is a return label, and I should be able to track but don't have a tracking number and ebay says it was shipped based on buyer's check and not USPS or other carriers.

As I said, I don't care about all of that, my question is why ebay sends an email that item was shipped when they are the only one that has the tracking? I trust when they say the item was shipped as I have no tracking

You did a nice thing, but it was WRONG.
You wait until you receive item back, then refund.
Now all you can do is hope that they send the item back.
Learn from your mistake and move on.
