I recently sold a large item on ebay. It was marked as local pickup. Because shipping was impossible to calculate. In the description I wrote, I will help accommodate shipping but buyer is responsible for shipping and all cost therein.
Got a buyer. Asked me to help with shipping. By paying the shippers. The buyer paid the shipping cost included in the buy it now price. Funds on hold awaiting delivery.
I think the shipping company is ripping me off. I'm certain of the 400$ shipping cost. Possibly even my item as well.
Am I just screwed here? Does the buyer walk away with a full refund and I'm out everything?

You advertised Local Pickup.
The buyer is not local.
The buyer wants you to pay for shipping.
The buyer paid the shipping cost included in the buy it now price.
Local pickup does not have a shipping cost since no shipping would be needed.
And your listing has Free Local Pickup but no other shipping available.
How did the buyer pay shipping then?
I'm guessing this is the fire extinguishers?
You may be best to cancel the entire transaction as Problem With Address.

You need to come back and explain more clearly what happened.
But I think what you are saying is that the buyer sent you extra money and asked you to use the extra to pay the shipper when he picked up the item.
If so, it is not the shipper who is ripping you off. It is the buyer.
Because unless you got the correct QR code from the buyer and gave it to eBay to prove delivery, the buyer can get a full refund and you will have paid to ship the item to a thief.

Yes. The buyer and I messaged eachother on ebay. And we agreed in a price that included the shipping. I put that price on the buy it now option and the bought it. Now I'm not sure who is ripping me off. I've asked since day 1 about giving me qr code. They said they didn't have one. Kinda played dumb I suppose you'd say. I've asked 3 more times. And they've ignored them.
Yesterday said it hasn't arrived. Give me refund.
I paid the shippers. And ebay has the money on hold. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what's going to happen? Any advice.
And yes I know. I've learned my lesson. Never doing anything like this again. I thought I was safe. But maybe not.

So I shouldn't even ship without getting code first?

I'm so freaking mad at myself. Like alot of people, I can't afford to get screwed Like this.

Sorry to reply so much. One more thing. I thought I was protecting myself by putting in the description that the buyer I'd responsible for shipping. But I guess that doesn't mean anything

What shipping company did you use?
There must be some sort of tracking/delivery confirmation?

Shiply. Which is a terrible way to go. Because speaking to them through email. They told me if they ripped me off, well that between me and the shipper .

Shiply, and all I got was the drivers phone number. No tracking. And we went with this company because they were the cheapest. Because the buyer had a price they needed, to make that budget, we had to go with a budget delivery.
I guess I'm mad anyway. But I'm extra t'd off because this all was what the buyer wanted. And I guess I was taking all the risk. I didn't realize it.

It sounds like you may have been scammed out of the shipping charge. The buyer should have arranged their own shipper and given them the QR code. If the shipper never showed up, you'd refund the buyer, which is annoying but you'd still have your item.
The buyer had you pay the shipper. Shiply is a service that connects over 100,000 shipping companies. I'm sure many are reputable. I'll bet some are just a dude or lady with a truck.
In this case, I suspect the "shipper" is either in cahoots with the buyer or is the same person. Once you paid the shipper, the buyer planned to get a refund because the item was never picked up. That would include the amount for the shipper.
Can you get a refund from Shiply? I suspect not because if I understand the scam correctly, the buyer arranged the shipper but just had you pay them by whatever means. So you can't pursue a refund or leave a bad review on Shiply for the shipper.
If I'm right, this is a clever scam that works even when people are trying to be careful and and keep the shipping payment on the eBay platform. Once you saw that the buyer paid, you thought there wasn't much risk in paying the shipper from the proceeds.
I hope you can get your money back. If you paid the shipper by credit card, I'd pursue a charge back. Good luck.

I am assuming the buyer has opened an INR case. If you cannot prove delivery then the buyer will likely get fully refunded and allowed to keep the item when, and if, it does arrive.
I am assuming this is the fire extinguisher system. This is a tough one with regards to shipping because of the weight and size(s) of the cylinders. The only cylinder I could find the dimensions for was the PCI-70 which is a 12" cylinder, 33 inches long and weighs 130 pounds.
Shipping the cylinders separate may have been a viable option. You are in Derby, Kansas and I am not sure where you shipped the items to but using Pirate Ship I was able to pull shipping cost for the large cylinder. For you to ship the one tank from Kansas to CA it would have cost $112 using UPS ground. UPS has a weight limit of 150 pounds and a length of 103 inches.
I guessed at the size and weight of the other tanks. I used 12" x 12" x 28" and 60 pounds for the weight and Pirate ship shows $65 to ship each tank from Kansas to CA using UPS ground so around $307 total to ship the four cylinders individually.

$400

Thank you for the info. And thanks to all of you as well. Especially for being helpful and kind. That's really rare these days online. Thank you.

I am sorry this happened to you. I think we can all understand how you're feeling because I am sure we all have been taken advantage of at some point either on ebay or off of ebay. The natural reaction is to be mad at yourself (I have done that many times) since we want to believe that other people have good intentions. This person essentially took money from you and the feelings you have are no different than if they walked in your house and took $400 off of your kitchen counter. I will never understand how people can live with themselves after doing things like this.
