Question about deadline for processing a return

I sold a mechanical watch to a guy on June 20th which he apparently broke, though he now claims it was "defective" when he bought it.   On July 26 he wrote and admitted it had been working, but says it stopped later, and agreed to take a generous coupon that essentially would have let him select from a decent number of free watches.   The next morning, as I was preparing that coupon, he revoked his offer and demanded a return instead, and put a hold on my account.   This guy is also a seller and is a first-class jerk - profoundly dishonest.   He has already threatened to write a negative review, and there is no doubt he will do that, and as everyone here knows, a single negative review here can ruin your account.

For this reason, I just want to pay this jerk off and get him out of my life but he caught me at a horrible time when I have almost no money in my account.  I will get more money on the 1st but I don't know when this will hit my account.  Somewhere, I read that I have until the 31st to send this refund but now I can't find it.   Does anyone know where this is?  Is that by the end of the day on the 31st?  Would it be in my timezone (pacific)?

I'd love to tell this guy where to stick it but with him holding the threat of a "negative review" over my head, I am not sure if that is possible.  I've done great with customer relations here, but one ass like this can really ruin things, and I have found this to be completely demoralizing.    Any advice or suggestions on how to handle this? - especially the timing of the return?

Re: Question about deadline for processing a return

The buyer has 30 days from the date they receive the item to file a claim in order to be covered by the Money Back Guarantee.  So when did they receive the item?

You have three days to respond to the claim.  But before you do that, we need to figure out if the MBG even covers them.

When did they file the claim.

Make sure you keep the emails from this member.  Them threatening to leave negative FB may be enough to have it removed if they were to do that.  But while none of us likes getting them, it does not hurt your seller status.  If you ever respond to some feedback you receive, always remember to be non emotional, professional and factual.  More seller hurt themselves by posting something that calls a buyer names or are less than professional in their response.  That goes further to hurt them with potential buyers looking at their FB than the negative FB itself.

Re: Question about deadline for processing a return

The item was sold on Jun 20th and delivered on Jun 26th, and he filed his claim on July 26.   The last day possible so it is difficult to think that was not intentional, especially given his other behavior and comments which seem to indicate he knows how to game the system here.

It is in your best interest as a seller to accept the return.  But do NOT refund the seller until they return the product.  You have 3 days in which to accept this, so get it done right away.  After that the buyer could ask Ebay to step in and they will refund the buyer out of your money.  You will get a defect on your seller dashboard and they may not refund your fees.  So it is VERY important that you don't allow that to happen.

It is likely the 31st, they do allow 3 BUSINESS days.  But really no need to wait until tomorrow.  Don't risk the defect.

It will tell you on the claim when you view it.

Re: Question about deadline for processing a return

If you are on Facebook I would contact eBay for Business there and let them know your situation.  I don't think it is allowable for anyone to do what could be called feedback extortion.  At the very least eBay should be made aware of this behavior.

@the_beezwing

You are absolutely correct.  However Ebay can't do anything until the buyer actually leaves the Feedback.  So calling or contacting them now will just be an exercise in frustration.

You have 3 business days to respond @bajasierra -- Thursday the 27th, Friday the 28th, skip the weekend, and Monday the 31st ... which you saw.

It's unlikely that this particular buyer will forget to ask eBay to step in as soon as possible, on August 1st. So you have until midnight California time July 31st to either refund ...

... or as recommended click Accept the return. Here's why: You then have 2 business days to issue the return label, and even after the label, you can still refund ahead of the return, when your money arrives.

Re: Question about deadline for processing a return

I believe that you can now report messages to eBay so if they put it into a message via the eBay message system there is that option.

You are absolutely correct.  We use to have this ability.  Then for some reason a year or more ago they took it away.  Many of us complained about it and thankfully the options are back.  It is a much needed option / tool.
