Didn't it use to be when receiving a refund that if the original payment came from your credit card, the refund would go back to your CC, but if paying with Paypal funds or your checking account, the refund would be credited to your Paypal balance?
A seller couldn't find the item I bought, so she refunded me. The original payment came from my checking account. Due to waiting for the original ACH transaction to hit my Paypal account, the refund wasn't processed until today. BUT, instead of showing up in my Paypal account, it's being sent back to my bank:
December 7, 2018
Bank Account Transfer to Bank
Transfer from PayPal Balance
Transaction ID 1T************
Transfer to XXXXXXXX NATIONAL BANK x-*******
So, I am STILL unable to use these funds to purchase a replacement gift. I have to wait for another ACH transaction to clear. *facepalm*
Am I remembering this process wrong? It's been along time since I was refunded for anything.

Copied from Paypal help pages
Where is my refund sent to?
How your money is refunded depends on how you made the original payment.

Thanks for the link! My question was, did I misremember the process? I don't recall ever having to wait for them to send the refund back to my checking account.

I am not positive I understand you question but if the seller did not have funds available in there paypal account when they went to refund you they would have to do a bank transfer which takes some time to get to your account before it is forwarded to your bank account?

No, this has nothing to do with the seller, other than she couldn't find my item. I paid with my checking account. The seller refunded me, but since the funds from my checking account hadn't actually hit Paypal due to ACH, the refund was pending. Once my original transaction cleared, the refund was processed, but intead of going into my Paypal balance where I could access the funds right away (either on ebay or IRL with my Paypal debit card), Paypal is sending it back to my bank. It's a huge inconvenience.

Afternoon,
My experience has been that any refund over the years has been credited back to the source used for payment ACCEPT:
When I used an ach check/draw against my bank account last summer and I recieved a PARTIAL refund. This situation was a result of one item being refunded that originally was part of several items purchased by checking out with the cart. The refund then went to my Paypal CASH folder and didn't go back to the bank.
Hopes this helps.

Hi Mr C!
I'm 99.95% positive that in the past, refunds only went back to the original funding source if a credit card was used. I remember having to initiate the transfer back to my checking account myself, if that's where I wanted the funds. (I usually just left them in paypal, though). It's one of the reasons I got the paypal debit card.
At my age I can misremember a lot, but I don't think that's the case here.

My experience has been if I transferred money from a bank account into my Paypal cash folder and I used that cash as a source of payment then yes if there is a refund etc it would go back into the cash portion but other than that everything over the years (and we use paypal extensively for far more than ebay activity) always went back to the source used to pay intially.
The only exception was what I mentioned happened to me last summer and that is because I used the cart to check out which involved several vendors/sellers and one of those purchases was refunded. That refund didn't go back to my debit card used but went into my Paypal cash.
