@victorianlace22 if it was an auction, then I don't believe that placement had anything to do with Promoted Listings.
There's only one kind of ad available for auctions, Promoted Listings Express, and as far as I know, those ads only show on listing pages for similar items, not in search or home page placements.

Listings promoted with Promoted Listings Express will have access to sponsored placements on listing pages of similar listings.
I've seen the "hot item" designation be given to both auctions and buy it now based on number of number of watchers in the past. Since you said this sold for higher than expected, it sounds like it was a popular listing, so that could be the reason it was featured or it could be some other criteria they are using for placement.
