Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

I'm contemplating listing a very large painting with local pick up only with No Returns.  Because of it's size and fragility it would be impossible for me to ship without hiring a professional shipper.  I expect to get somewhere around $1700 for it, (orig $4800-5200?).

I have never sold anything with LPO and am not familiar with the drawbacks that might occur.   Concerned about scam buyers, or one who changes their mind or damages it.  What happens if a buyer (or rep of the buyer) picks up the painting onsite and accepts it, then at a later date, buyer files a claim for whatever reason, wanting to return for a refund?

What if they bring it back to me in a different condition than it was when originally sold?

I assume, I have to accept it regardless, but thought I'd ask.

Get payment in cash, so you don't have to deal with regrets or scams.

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

Local Pickup items are not generally covered by buyer protection.  I've done fine with them paid in the ordinary way.  Buyers aren't all comfortable with that size of a cash transaction.

One thing to watch out for are buyers who are confused and think you might ship this thing to them for free, or supplying their own reason for believing you are local to them.  I'd put "local pickup only in Newberg, OR" in the title, and as the first line of the description.

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

I do it all the time.
Last gigantic humongous big, really big painting was,

'Shy Girl" Realism 2003 Giant Oil Painting Canvas Pablo Ramella 71 X 47 Inches & he came to pick it up in a truck from a different state more than 100 miles away.
He left me positive feedback too.  (My 6th down from the top of my feedback)
It’s always has been a good experience.
& if buyer wants to pay with PayPal it’s ok too!

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

It used to be one of the safest ways to sell.

eBay changed it so now buyers are %100 percent covered buy the eBay

Money Back Guarantee now matter how they pay you.

You need to follow all these rules. And you are not allowed to tell them you

want to be paid in cash, it's their choice how they want to pay.

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

I have only ever accepted cash for a picked up item. Something picked up is inspected by the buyer and sold as is, regardless of what eBay wants to say about it.

I have only ever accepted cash for a picked up item.

So what do you do when they pay in the regular way?  That's what usually happens to me.

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

For local pickup items, we don’t recommend accepting payment methods that take time to clear, such as checks.

I love this line. THEY don't recommend it - but WE would rather recommend a payment method that can't be yanked back from us within 180 days.

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

Since it's local pickup only, the worldwide reach of the Ebay venue is useless to you. SELL it locally - Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, whatever. Those reach as far as anyone is going to be willing to travel to pick it up. Specify cash only. Then you don't have all the possibilities of being ripped off that Ebay's Money Back Guarantee (especially combined with PayPal's 180 day period to open a case) INVITES! Good luck!

Re: Question About Selling Large Painting with Local Pick-Up Only

I have sold several large pieces of art on craigslist. I meet people at a place where I feel safe ---used to be the mall--
The buyer was able to examine the art in person & I got CASH with no FVF---thats a savings of $170. on a $1700. piece----give it a try----I hope it works out for you---Oh & one more thing---start at a higher price than what you really want & give yourself some room for negotiation-----People on CRAIGSLIST NEVER pay the first asking price in my experience----DO NOT take ANYTHING but CASH---Best of luck to you.

If you got cash, there can be no comebacks.

Keep in mind though.

No returns does NOT mean No Refunds.
