Promoted Listings - Trending Rates

Hi everyone!

This morning when I was doing my daily relists - I noticed that a LOT of the trending rates on the clothing items we sell went down significantly!  This I find unusual since most of the time, the rates go up!  I mean from 11 or 12 % to 7%!  I am going through all my campaigns now and updating the ones I have that are above that rate!  Would be nice to actually make a sale today though or it doesn't really matter!  Yesterday and Friday were good days....I guess everyone is at the mall!  Ugh!!!

Well, I thought people would be interested in this but maybe most of you don't use promoted listings?  Well, I was glad I updated mine because I don't want to pay more than I have to and certainly not more than the trending rates!

I do use promoted listings and just noticed the same thing this morning.  Trending rates dropped form 8.9% to 7.0% in the ballcard arena.  I think that many folks 'dipped their toe in the water' with regard to the use of promoted listings recently, selecting a low rate.  And that drove down the trending rates.  I think that I saw a post or two saying that the poster was going to give it a whirl at 1% to see if it made any difference.

I've been all over the place with my rates.  And I have yet to see much of a difference while using the program.  We have tried every ebay gimmick out there to generate traffic.  But none of it seems to make any difference.  Sometimes we are seen.  Sometimes we are hidden.  Certainly not consistent as in years past.  What we are seeing sales wise below.  Been running like this for months with all our listings spread out over a 30 day period.sales.PNG

Also noticed a potential issue when adding listings to a promoted listings campaign.  We added about 550 listings during the past 30 days, going from 250 listings to roughly 800.  Added each listing one at a time to an existing promoted listing campaign.  As of yesterday, my Seller Hub indicated that our listings had increased 98.1%.  So my theory is that each time we added to a campaign, all the listings within said campaign would reindex and be hidden for some period of time.  We discontined that practice yesterday.  Hub now recognizes a 122% increase in listings.  Should be 300% plus.  Maybe the rest of the listings will show up in the next week or so.  Could be something that is causing slow sales for some.

I create a new campaign every day with the listings I end a relist (selling similar and changing titles/prices).  So far it has been working but not today!  I don't know what is up with eBay.  We get ahead some then fall back again.  It's like eBay sees that our 31 day total is increasing and someone says....hey put a stop to that and gives the sales to someone else. 😞

Welcome to reality I guess.

Has it ever crossed your mind that all the hoops are perhaps not the real issue? Maybe its not your search standing, maybe its not your keywords, maybe its not because you took the wrong picture with a 5.9 gigapixel camera at a 33 degree angle with the wrong colored background?

None of this garbage mattered back in the REAL selling days. Why? Because Ebay had buyers, buyers with lots of cool, interesting stuff priced relatively cheap because the seller didnt have to inflate their price to cover all these hoops, created by Ebay.

Sales started shrinking so Ebay had to make a maze to make profit. They had to make you think you were going the wrong way and with a little financial help they could point you to the exit but just when you thought you were getting close, the maze was changed again! They will still point you in the right direction don't worry, I mean after all they created the maze.

Its so obvious but people can't seem to get it.

Fwiw, if you have that sort of margin to give up, forget promoted listings and perhaps experiment with netting that amount out of your sell price? My guess is that that would be a much more effective strategy to increase conversion.

Unfortunately with the way eBay is now, our stuff would probably be buried in search if not promoted.  We sell clothing for the most part and it's a saturated category.  Granted we have some of the most sought after brands but I am seeing that a ton of other sellers have these and NWT.  Not sure where in the H^#* they are getting them to sell....and so many of them are.  We have Nordstrom brands but a lot of our items have repairs and defects because for the most part they are returned items.  Where to get perfect, NWT items?  I really have no idea!

It may have no effect to lower the ad rate. eBay says that if you change the ad rate during the course of a listing, the rate they charge is the rate when the listing is first clicked.

"What ad rate am I charged if a buyer clicks multiple times on my ad at different times?

We charge the ad rate that applied when the buyer first clicked on your promoted listing within the 30 day window."

It remains unstated whether eBay is talking about when THE buyer clicks the ad or when any buyer clicks the ad.

It would be THE buyer. So, in your example, is someone who does not buy clicks at the higher rate, but the buyer clicks at the lower rate, the lower rate will be applied. So, lowering your rate during the listing's time frame can make a difference.
