I have my stores in vacation mode at this time. I have used promoted listings at ~1% for the last year and a half. Mostly just to get the additional listing that eBay creates so that there might be a better chance of a buyer seeing my items.

I was wondering if I should go ahead and end the old campaigns and start fresh campaigns? Any thoughts on this strategy?

I used to buy promoted listings. I quit it. EBAY doesn't give a 2nd listing on promoted items like they used to. I don't believe promoted listings are worth the $.

My understanding was that you only pay the extra fee if the listing sells. I see it as a great way to try and unload dead inventory with no risk and a bigger tax write off at the end of the year.

For the original question it does help to freshen up listings after a while.

Not true, you can buy a promoted listing organically. I know, because I use promoted listings. You can do as you want, or believe as you want. It's your store.

Over the last month, I have had many listings that were promoted, sell organically. Take that for what you want.

Here's a tip. If you are not promoting at least at trending rate, you might as well not bother promoting. They won't be shown. Promoted listings are displayed in order of promoted percentages. So, if you are promoting at 1% in a category that is trending at 8%, yours will likely never be seen.

Highest promoted rates are shown first, and it works down the scale from there.

I don't think a new campaign has any effect on it.

Yes, that is what I understood. eBay created the 2nd indentical listing that had a "promoted label" attached to it and if the buyer purchased from that listing, then eBay charged the promoted listing fee.

Does that mean that the buyer bought off the original listing and not the promoted listing?

Yes, precisely.

I do not think you get a "second" listing. Your listing shows up in the "promoted" section. There is no second listing. They have the same item number.

I would hope if a search was sorted by 'lowest price + shipping' the amount of promoting would make no difference. If I list something $20 lower than the next person and they promote it say 10% and I don't promote at all my item should show up as the lowest price through sorting. That's the only way I shop on ebay and especially on Amazon where I spend 99% of my discretionary on-line money. If the search by lowest total cost feature doesn't work properly on ebay shame on them again.

I never thought there was a second listing created either. Seems like a waste of server space for ebay when they would only want the item to sell "promoted" so they increase their revenue.

Just an FYI. I use an adblocker that removes eBay's promoted listings. I never see them. It's estimated that just over 25% of internet users block advertising with an ad-blocking app/extension.

Promoted listings show up even in low to high price search. Price of the promoted item are irrelevant. They still show up.

Example:

You search for Widget XYZ. You sort by low to high price. Lowest price happens to be 1.99 but in the promoted spot, the promoted listings show up as 49.99.

Promoted listing show up in their designated area. It doesn't matter how you filter results. Promoted listings have their own spot in each search and are shown based on that criteria. It's like picture in picture.

Thanks for the explanation for people who didn't realize that. Who looks at promoted listings when they shop when everyone knows all you have to do is scroll down to the first un-promoted listing filtered by lowest price? I know promoted listing are the first list shown.

OP, I don't know the answer, but if you try changing the campaign, I hope you share back the results.

As for other comments, they are outdated info. The promo listings are no longer displayed only by order of ad rate. (if they ever were)

At the same time as duplicate listings were announced curtailed, it was announced that priority of promo listings would be set by same factors as regular listings.
