I certainly wouldn't expect them to spin this one out from a negative point of view...

I mean, certainly they collected "good" articles and studies to publish, right?

Unfortunately this particular strategy belongs to businesses whose right hand has no clue as to what the left hand could be doing.  The bank account takes in income and pays out expenses, that includes employee wages and this which falls under 'advertising costs.' However, nobody has a clue as to how exactly it all comes together, how they survive is amazing in itself.

The case study is one seller, and no surprise, a seller who has been happy with the results of PLA.  Of course, now that PLA is being made available to more of his competitors, his viewpoint might change. He was clearly one of the sellers in the original beta release. So, no, I wouldn't make too much of the case study results. I'm just posting the link because some people might be interested.

As some of us have been emphasizing since the Fall Seller Update, PLA is NOT for everyone, primarily because:

1. Some business models are better suited to this type of ad campaign than others.

2. It is more complicated than PLS, and some ebay sellers don't do "complicated" very well.

That said, my guess is, some sellers will figure out how to optimize this for their business and will do well with it. Others will wisely stay away from it. And others will try it and waste money because it's not a good fit for their model or for the seller's abilities.

This system is developed by the scum at ebay that want to nickle and dime sellers even more.    You know the big difference between this and typical promoted listings?  You have to pay regardless if something sells or not.   Ebay knows that most sellers have no experience with adsense so they developed this system because they know thousands of sellers will throw money at it hoping to increase their sales.

Ebay can show whatever propaganda they want to, this type of advertising structure benefits one person and one person only, Ebay. 

I will never pay Ebay to advertise something without selling it, if I want to do that, I'll hit up Google adsense, the system ebay stole this from, and a system with far more customers.

Agreed; I think that's the typical breakdown of results from a campaign like that. The only measure of its success or failure will be what the final percentages are: how many succeeded, how many failed, and how many stayed away.

Me, my only concern is whether this is going to significantly increase the quantity of glop that I have to wade through at the top of the page before I can finally get down to seeing the genuinely new listings. The items in promoted listings are there not because they are good, but because the seller was persuaded to spend money on promoting them.

cracks me up when I see comments by people who have zero feedback, zero listings, and hiding under multiple I.D.'s

Another issue eBay needs to clean up!

I got the same thing.  I'm familiar with this from Google and Etsy, and I expect it's a very similar program with similar strengths and pitfalls.  The scheme is pretty much standard for PPC promotional programs so I'm not surprised it resembles Adsense.

@valueaddedresource I haven't had a chance to get back to the Ads Academy, but what I saw of it earlier, I will say ebay has put more into this than the usual:  do this, do this, then click to launch....
