Promote it?

In your opinion does "promote it" work? it it even worth it?

I think it's just a way for eBay to get more of our money and if we don't do it our items will be so buried in the search no one will find it. The percentage they "suggest" is crazy! 12% on a 29 dollar item plus the transaction? seems like a lot

Promoted listings do indeed work for competitive items.  You can ignore the suggested rates.  I usually just use the minimum 2%.  And yes, a suggested 12% rate is ridiculous.

Many of my sales happen via promoted listings. Like m60drvr said, you can ignore the suggested rates. I too just use the 2% minimum most times. Best of luck to you!

Of course they do it to make more money. How special is your stuff? Will it benefit from being shown on someone else’s listing? That’s basically what you’re buying.
