I posted earlier on a thread which I can no longer find. Buyer received a rather expensive item, claimed it was damaged in shipping and wanted me to get insurance to refund his purchase and keep the item. I tried to get him to return it but he said it was already sent out for repairs. he had claimed a small chip on a piece of glass and sent two photos neither of which proved anything. In fact my photo in original listing showed it better than his as it was there at listing. Oddly now that it is *ahem* sent out for repairs, he is finding more problems with it.. Now a flange for a mounting bracket has been discovered to be bent. Item was receive this past Friday and he contacted me just before 6 PM and I responded by 8. Now this Monday there is more "shipping damage". I have contacted eBay about this and received a form letter return. My concern now is if he can't have it for free he will actually do serious damage to it.

Your job is done and you should get all your money. They should have returned the item for a refund. Once it goes to a third party, they should not be able to return.

Has a return case been filed with eBay? Or are you just in a back and forth with messages?

Return case has been filed and shipping label sent. Waiting for the item to be shipped. At this point if/when the package arrives I will be filmed opening it and it will be examined for damage.

You could hire Steven Speilburg to film you opening the return, you would be wasting your time.
Ebay will not consider not or even look at it in a dispute.
I hope all goes well with the return.

EBay won't accept video or even look at it.
You are on the hook for the refund regardless when the item shows delivered. You will have 2 days to refund.
There is the caveat that if the item goes to a 3rd party, the buyer loses MBG protection. If you can prove that, you might have a leg to stand on.
Not for sure if you have to try to prove that before the refund is due or what. If you leave it up to eBay, they will more than likely refund and your account gets a defect.
Perhaps someone that has experienced this type of situation can let you know.

That's not how shipping insurance works. You as the seller are responsible for dealing with the insurance so the options the buyer would have would be 1 you file the claim and refund the buyer or 2 they get a repair quote and you file insurance on the repair amount. If the carrier pays the full claim for the value of the item most likely neither of you get to keep it.
Buyer did none of those things before reporting the damage so they are likely to lose that case.
