I recently sold an item to a buyer with 300+ feedback.
He told me he was going to pay within 48 hours(which he did). The payment had a note to write outside the box (gift=free) and told me to put the invoice inside the box.
I was wondering is this a scam? I told him I cannot do that and Ill mark the payment as paid on the invoice.
He paid through eBay as well since I had a notification the item has been paid.
Thank you.

Sounds like your buyer is in another country and does not want to pay the fees due to his/her country to import your item. Thus the request for you to lie saying it is a "gift".

It sounds like an international buyer who wants to avoid customs fees. It's illegal to circumvent customs fees and mark the item as a gift when it's not.

That's your answer then - an international buyer is trying to avoid import fees.
Tell the buyer you cannot mark the item as a gift and if they would prefer to cancel the order to let you know by [date / time] when you plan to ship.
