Please help me understand "Good til cancelled" WHAT on EARTH is it all about??

Hello, I guess either an auction or "good til cancelled" are our only options now, and that's fine but I sure don't understand it. I've been selling items and then the auction is over but I'm still being charged...

I list an item under GTC, it sells and it continues to stay alive in my selling. But, if I go to the item it is "sold".

If I want to "end the listing" I have to give a reason, yet the auction IS NOT ALIVE!

There's no option to relist the same exact item, or keep it listed, or rejuvenate my item and if I try to newly list the same item and I'm told "you cannot list the same item again, you have this item active" - but, IT ALREADY SOLD!!!!

I am obviously missing a very key piece of this, because after my single item sells and I have another one, I have to cancel the GTC auction, then list it again. So where is the benefit??

Please help me understand how to use GTC in my favor, to me it's just a way for Ebay to automatically continue charging me for a listing that has been sold and is no longer available! Makes no sense to me...

Thanks for any help!!

Check your setting. I appears that you have the Out Of Stock option turned on. It will relist an item that is out of stock up to three times - charging you for it each time (either a monetary charge or against your listing allowance).

I don't think GTC is for auction style listings, only for fixed price lstings.

Not so good for people selling a one of  kind item.

Good for sellers selling hundreds of the same item.

The listing runs for a month/30 days then automatically renews for another month/30 days.  If you wish to end the listing, you have to manualy end the listing.

You don't have to end it. Just revise the "Quantity available" from zero to 1 (or however many you now have).

As noted in the other post, this is happening because in your site preferences the option for "Out of stock" has been checked off. If you want to end this system, just go and unselect it. The your listing will end when the quantity hits zero.

The benefit is that your listing with the adjusted quantity will show that you have already sold one (or more).  This enhances the credibility of your listing and sometimes gives it a boost in search results.

OP's "auctions" are all fixed price listings.

Good until canceled listings do not run for 30 days. They renew each month on the same date that they started, which would be after 30 or 31 days; or 28 or 29 for the March renewal.

If your sold GTC listings are staying active, you out of stock option is turned on.

If you sell one item and you have another of the same item and you want to list, you don't have to cancel the old listing.

Revise the old listing and update the quantity.

Have a great day.

Re: Please help me understand "Good til cancelled" WHAT on EARTH is it all about??

Some times I list an item that I have 3 more of, but I want to test the waters 1st.

I don't want to list all 4 in one shot.

I haven't clicked on any settings, they must be default??

To my knowledge, I can use the auction style format (which no one does anymore, or good till cancelled.

I'll have to try and grasp this in the morning, none of it makes common sense to me yet...

Thank you for your responses, I'll be back!

Re: Please help me understand "Good til cancelled" WHAT on EARTH is it all about??

Then how do we use GTC if we have just 1 item and we want it to end after someone hits the BIN??

They buy it, Ebay keeps charging me, but I physically have to go back to the auction and tell them - "I lost the item", "The item is damaged", "the item is no longer for sale" - But it just SOLD!!

Why does it keep running?? Am I using the wrong listing??

It doesn't make sense to me, lol...

Re: Please help me understand "Good til cancelled" WHAT on EARTH is it all about??

How do I list something as GTC if I only have 1 of them and I want the auction to end by itself once it's sold.

Why is Ebay relisting the item that just sold??

Am I misinterpretting "GTC" as good until it sells??

Re: Please help me understand "Good til cancelled" WHAT on EARTH is it all about??

You need to go to your Site Preferences and un-check the option that is called "Out of stock."

This link will probably take you to the page that you need:

https://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyeBay&CurrentPage=MyeBayPreferences&

If you un-check that, then your listings will just end when they are sold, as you want them to do.

Re: Please help me understand "Good til cancelled" WHAT on EARTH is it all about??

You aren’t paying attention- you accidentally have “out of stock” set up in your preferences. That keeps the listing active until you add more of the same. It’s for sellers with multiples of an item.

A GTC for a single items is just over and ends when the item is purchased - so long as you aren’t set up for “out of stock”
