Hi
I wonder if anyone else out there has had enough of the high fees that eBay and Paypal charge?
I sold an item for $645.00 and between eBay and Paypal they sucked up almost a $100.00.
It's also, in my opinion, total nonsense that final fees include shipping cost as part of the gross.
It's not, it's net.

P.S. we'll see if this is posted?

Then you won’t be happy to know come October 11 PayPal will no longer refund fees for returns or cancellations. November 1st you will be paying the respective PayPal % on the tax collected by PayPal going to the state. It’s a total cluster f*ck for e-commerce...

There are posts from people here every day complaining about high eBay Fees so I’m not sure why you would think this wouldn’t be posted.
seems like eBay is cheaper than selling consignment with a much wider audience.

For sales to my state that additional fee will be about 3% of 6%. That should not be a deal breaker for you. It’s unfair but it is also a very small amount.

You should have known what the selling fees are BEFORE you listed your item. It should not be coming as a surprise after the sale. It is the responsibility of sellers to know this stuff and it is important to know it so you can properly price whatever it is you are selling.
So for your $645 sale it would have gone like this.
19.01 PayPal Fees
64.50 10% FVF from Ebay
83.51 Total
I don't know if you had any listing enhancements that increased your fees.
You can check other sites, but I think you'll find that Ebay isn't the most expensive out there. And keep in mind that other sites may not have the traffic Ebay has either. That is a huge value.

There is also 10% eBay fee on whatever shipping the OP charged.
And possibly the PP fees were higher if the customer was non-US.
A consignor to a public auction would pay the auctioneer between 10 and 25% of the hammer price, but there could also be photography fees, catalogue fees, insurance fees which are non-refundable. Our public auction has a $25 per lot minimum-- mostly to discourage consignors who want us to auction lots that will not even make a $25 bid.
And consignment shops run around 40% of selling price.

Maybe part of the difference between the $83.51 total that you came to and his $100.00 that he is claiming is the 10% FVF on the shipping charge that he is complaining about as well.
The reason that eBay charges the 10% on the shipping fee is because - back in the day - there were sellers getting around eBay's fees by charging next to nothing on the product itself and then charging an insane shipping rate - i.e. $1.00 for the item and $25.00 shipping (when it would have really only cost a few dollars to ship...so eBay had no choice but to put the 10% FVF on the entire transaction...yeah, that sucks for the rest of us honest sellers but what can you do...the few ruin it for the many...

High fees compared to what? A Yard Sale? A Flea Market? Craigslist? You could have consigned your item at a cost of approx. 50%, could have sold it on Amazon for a 15% fee, could have sold it to a Pawn Shop for a loss of at least 50%, or sold it at an auction for a 25% fee. So no the fees are lower than other venues that get a lot of eyeballs. I suspect that there was a reason that you sold it on ebay.

There are some great answers on here. Ultimately eBay is a for profit business such as PayPal. They spend a lot of money on television ads, online ads, local ads, servers, infrastructure, payment gateways, bank level security, anti money laundering, fraud reviews, disputes between parties, etc... These companies can't offer their services for free.
At the end of the day the adage "You get what you pay for" rings true here. If you want to pay less, you can use lesser sites or do a yard sale or use Craigslist. You won't see nearly as many benefits, but those are the benefits you are paying for specifically so of course you won't get them.
It's not the answer you are looking for, and I understand you are probably looking for others that want to express their dissatisfaction (and I am sure some will), but the majority of sellers on here know they are here voluntarily and as long as they perceive value like I do, I am sure they will keep using eBay.

According to the seller's listing it was free shipping. I think they were just rounding numbers went they said $100.

If the Fvf wasn’t calculated including shipping the percentage would be much higher. So honest sellers would be paying the same either way.
